A garden filled with heavenly fragrances elevates the experience, and gardening experts have shared their top picks for plants that will bring your outdoor space to life with captivating scents. Fragrant plants like lavender and gardenia are renowned for their intoxicating aromas, and cultivating them now could transform your garden into a sensory oasis this summer. Morris Hankinson, founder of Hopes Grove Nurseries Ltd, and landscaper Steven Bell revealed their top three recommendations for a fragrant garden that's sure to impress friends and family. The best part? Many of these plants don't require a large garden and thrive in smaller spaces, making them perfect for pot gardens. Hankinson noted: "Whether your garden has a patio or your garden is a patio, there are many fragrant plants that will not only provide your garden with colour but also bring plenty of floral fragrance as well." Lavender, Lavender's calming and sweet scent is a result of a complex blend of aromatic compounds that work together to create a distinctive floral fragrance, which makes it a perfect addition to your gardenreports the Express. Hankinson remarked: "Yes, it's the most obvious choice, but it's for a reason. "All you have to do is brush past some lavender flowers to be hit with that scent – which is, incidentally, delightfully calming and very good for you. He further noted the importance of well-drained soil for lavenders and mentioned that the plant is "drought tolerant but will need watering when growing in a container". He also advised: "Prune it regularly to keep it thriving." Spring bulbs. Gardening enthusiasts should take note that now is the prime time to plant spring bulbs. These plants are often considered the best for their fragrant contribution, offering delightful smells throughout the area. Morris commented: "Spring bulbs can provide a much-needed lift after winter and plenty of fragrance. "Hyacinths particularly are highly scented, there are many narcissi with fragrance and even some tulips. "Plant up a container with a bulb lasagne, layering the bulbs for a burst of spring scent." Jasmine. The enchanting smell of jasmine is attributed to a unique combination of aromatic compounds present in its flowers. Morris elucidated: "Jasmine has a sweet, intoxicating fragrance with pretty flowers from orange to yellow and pink, the fragrance is even better in the evening and is a magnet for pollinators." Morris suggests choosing white jasmines for planting and highlights the necessity of "well-drained soil, full sun and with support such as a trellis, fence or canes" for their successful growth.
