Man City have an easy Josko Gvardiol decision - and a trickier one Josko Gvardiol scored at Wembley on Sunday and also kept a clean sheet for Manchester City, although he can thank the woodwork for that. Josko Gvardiol Manchester City fans saw a rare treat on Sunday at Wembley: a Josko Gvardiol goal with his head. The burly Croatian hammered the ball into the back of the net to put an end to any Nottingham Forest resurgence in their FA Cup semi-final. Gvardiol scored a towering header against City when playing for RB Leipzig in the Champions League, when he was building his reputation as a commanding centre-back. However, since he moved to the Etihad he has played almost exclusively on the left - and scored a number of worldies with both feet in the process. ‌ Pep Guardiola has refused to bring Gvardiol into the middle for most of the season, even amid an injury crisis that robbed him of basically all of his other centre-backs. The 23-year-old has stuck out on the left right up until the last few weeks when he has finally moved back to the position where he first caught City's eye. ‌ Even at left-back, Gvardiol has been head and shoulders above everyone else this season. He has been more present for a start, with nobody else coming within 500 minutes of the 4,394 he has racked up in all competitions. Like everyone else, his form hasn't been perfect. He made mistakes in the setbacks against Feyenoord and Tottenham that affected him, yet he rallied with the support of teammates and has been the best of a disappointing bunch. Scoring the goal that confirmed City's place in the FA Cup final will have given him extra satisfaction given he was involved in a mix-up with Stefan Ortega in last year's defeat to United at Wembley. It also confirmed the easy decision City have over their Player of the Year this season. Article continues below What is trickier is where to play Gvardiol moving forward. Since Nico O'Reilly came on at Bournemouth in the FA Cup, Gvardiol has played in the middle alongside Ruben Dias - and the results have been impressive. In six-and-a-half matches together, they have conceded just three goals: two from Palace and the Aston Villa penalty. Their partnership has given Guardiola pause for thought with the way it gives balance to the team. "I like him, especially with the build-up with the left," the manager said of Gvardiol. ‌ "He's fast, so fast, going behind. I think Ruben and him as a person, they are so generous, so they talk a lot, especially Ruben, and I think they are doing a really, really good partnership, so he's an option. "We'll see if we buy, I don't think we're going to or that the club needs centre defenders, because we have a lot, and we bought two young ones in winter, but we'll see. "The important thing is to have a player who can play there, and can play in left back, and that is so important for us." ‌ Manu Akanji, John Stones and Nathan Ake will all look to come into contention for a starting position at centre-back, not to mention Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis looking to impress. Yet there is undeniably a quality to the Gvardiol-Dias partnership that may be hard to beat with any other combination. Guardiola likes his defenders to be fluid, able to play multiple positions so that he can adapt for whatever opposition they face. At the same time, he has not been averse to sticking with the same central partnership if he thinks it is what the team needs. Akanji is already back in the matchday squads and the others will look to follow, so there is a good chance the partnership gets broken up before the end of the season. What City will have to work out is whether Gvardiol could yet oust his teammates and keep the centre-back role that he looks most comfortable in. ‌ -- Here at The Manchester Evening News, we're dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester City coverage and analysis.
