Get the latest traffic and travel news from Nottinghamshire Motorists have been grappling with major hold-ups due to sweltering heat following a 'serious' accident leading to an almost four-hour closure of the M1. The southbound section of the M1 was sealed off from 9.50am, stretching between J37, A628 Whinby Road, and J36, A61 at Barnsley South/Hoyland. The northbound carriageway experienced closure too but has since been opened again. Presently, there is "no estimated reopening time". There were reports of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance landing nearby the incident site. Described as "serious" by law enforcement, the crash caused extensive queues towards the A61 via Birdwell as traffic is rerouted. South Yorkshire Police offered information: "Please be aware that the M1 between junctions 36 and 37 is currently closed due to a road traffic collision. Emergency services remain at the scene.", reports Yorkshire Live. They further advised: "We are advising motorists to avoid the area and plan an alternative route where possible." Additionally, National Highways updated on the matter: "The #M1 southbound remains closed between J37 (#Barnsley) and J36 (#Hoyland) following a serious collision. Accident investigation works remain ongoing at scene. There is currently no estimated reopening time." With the added stress of gridlocked conditions due to the crash, drivers are also coping with temperatures soaring to 25 degrees in South Yorkshire. Acknowledging the closure, some individuals on social media advocated for police to distribute water to those stuck in traffic. One concerned individual reached out online, stating: "Can someone on duty make sure the people who are stuck get some water? There may be young children stuck in this heat with no provisions." In a separate community forum, locals were updating each other on current events. A post from one resident read: "Air ambulance just landed by J36 M1 Emergency services on scene. Traffic delays. Looks like m1 south closed between 37 and 36 due to a road traffic collision."
