Students perform in throwback clip from 2003 and people then realise who they are A clip of two students performing a song in 2003 has resurfaced and people soon realised who the band were - and the track in question would go on to become a major hit despite a few changes to the lyrics The resurfaced clip shows the future hitmakers performing an unpolished, early rendition of the hit song (stock image) (Image: urbazon via Getty Images ) Music fans were captivated by an unearthed video of two students performing a hit song back in 2003, before realising exactly who the performers are. The band is known for its psychedelic pop sound and was first established in 2002, yet it wasn't until five years later that they would achieve widespread fame. In the rediscovered clip, an early and unpolished version of what would become an iconic indie synth-pop anthem echoes out to an open-air audience as the pair of students stand behind a makeshift setup crowded with music mixing equipment, sound systems, and a laptop. The relaxed vibe of this early "gig" sees onlookers dancing with abandon, little knowing the track belted out would soon ascend to smash-hit status. And the number they were dancing to? None other than Kids, the timeless hit by MGMT. The old footage showcases an early form of the song, distinct from the end product that would later seize the zeitgeist. MGMT's inaugural album, Oracular Spectacular, made waves when it dropped in 2007. Founders of MGMT, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, both vocalists and deft instrumentalists, created the group while in their first year at Wesleyan University. Reminiscing about those days in an interview, Goldwasser confessed: "We weren't trying to start a band. We were just hanging out and showing each other music that we liked." Following the success of Oracular Spectacular, MGMT found themselves in the enviable position of supporting heavyweight musicians such as Radiohead and M.I.A., alongside gracing the stages of myriad popular music festivals. The duo even had the privilege of warming the stage for none other than the legendary Paul McCartney – a self-proclaimed fan – prior to his shows in August 2009 at Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts. A snippet from MGMT's early days in 2003 surfaced recently on X, accompanied by the nostalgic caption: "Two dudes in 2003, unaware they were making a legendary song". One enthused: "MGMT is awesome. Electric feel is a great one as well". Another declared: "Before there was Tame Impala, we had MGMT", while a third expressed gratitude: "Fantastic, thanks for posting". Look at them, not a cell phone in sight, just pure vibes". Another person shared a different clip of MGMT and added: "I remember watching this stream on early YouTube days in 2009. Dudes were way ahead of their time". This sparked a grateful response from one user: "Thanks a lot for posting that I've never seen it. I never really went down the rabbit hole with them. I just really love that album - plus one of the San Francisco Giants used to walk out to the plate to Electric Feel".
