Prohibitory Orders Imposed Across Mangaluru City Following Murder of VHP’s Suhas Shetty

Mangaluru: Prohibitory orders have been imposed across Mangaluru City Commissionerate limits and Dakshina Kannada district police limits, and security has been tightened following the murder of Suhas Shetty on May 1. In response to the incident, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a district-wide bandh on Friday. Bus services between Mangaluru and Udupi have been suspended following a stone pelting incident and additional police forces have been deployed across sensitive areas. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner and Additional District Magistrate Anupam Agrawal issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), declaring the entire Commissionerate limits as a prohibited zone from 6 am on May 2 to 6 am on May 6. The order was issued following a report from the City Special Branch which warned that the situation in the city was highly sensitive and could lead to a breakdown in law and order if preventive measures were not taken. As per the Commissioner’s order, the public is barred from shouting slogans, singing provocative songs, making inflammatory gestures, or using any means—including social media—to disseminate content that could disrupt public peace or morality. The order also prohibits the carrying or transport of dangerous items and the creation, circulation, or storage of provocative videos that may incite unrest. The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district has also imposed prohibitory orders across the entire district till May 5, citing the same incident and the need to uphold law and order. Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a Dakshina Kannada district bandh on May 2. “The jihadi fundamentalists are trying to extend their tentacles in Dakshina Kannada district. In the past few days, we have seen several incidents—shouting pro-Pakistan slogans, spreading anti-India messages, and now the murder of a Hindu activist. Condemning this, we have called for a bandh today,” VHP South Division joint secretary Sharan Pumpwell told Deccan Chronicle. Tension prevailed in the district on Friday. A stone was reportedly hurled at a bus en route to Mangaluru during the early hours. Following the incident, bus services between Mangaluru and Udupi have been suspended temporarily. Police security has been intensified, with additional forces deployed. Senior police officers have camped in Mangaluru to monitor the situation. Suhas's house is situated near Karinja in Bantwal Taluk, about 40 km from Mangaluru. Hindu activists have proposed to hold the procession of the mortal remains of Suhas Shetty from BC Road to his house (about 15 km). Suhas Shetty, a Hindu activist with a criminal history and one of the accused in the 2022 Fazil murder case, was hacked to death by a group of assailants near Kinnipadavu Cross on the outskirts of Mangaluru city on May 1 night.
