More info Martin Clunes has issued a Doc Martin update after 18 years, which is set to leave fans gutted. The actor, who played Dr Martin Ellingham on the hit medical comedy-drama, appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain on Friday (May 2), where he spoke to hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Rob Rinder about his upcoming travel series. Islands of the Atlantic premieres tonight at 9pm on ITV1, and sees Martin embark on an epic journey to explore a "spectacular array of ocean islands". The GMB presenters also touched on the actor recently reuniting with his former Men Behaving Badly co-star, Neil Morrissey. Towards the end of the interview, Charlotte asked: "Talking about things coming back, everyone's obviously been a huge fan of Doc Martin, is there any chance that it might come back?" "I'm almost at the age where a GP has to retire, do you see?" Martin replied, with Rob quickly saying "no" in disbelief. "18 years in private medicine," Martin noted as Charlotte shared a proposal for the show: "Yeah, but we could have Doc Martin [in] the retirement years?" Martin continued: "Old Doc Martin. What about the prequel? Young Doc, baby Doc Martin." "You don't seem to age, I don't know what's going on," Rob concluded. (Image: ITV) Created by Dominic Minghella, Doc Martin followed the trials and tribulations of Martin Ellingham, a brilliant but socially challenged doctor who moves from London to the picturesque village of Port Wenn in Cornwall. After ten successful seasons, the show came to an end with a Christmas special in December 2022, marking the final time viewers saw the beloved Cornish doctor on screen. "All good things have to come to an end, and I'm sure there are lots of people who aren't fans of the show who think it's terribly repetitive anyway. But we're at huge pains not to repeat ourselves," Martin said on Loose Women at the time. "I just think we've sort of done everything. I mean, it would be so great to just sort of carry on, but I don't think we can keep it as good." Doc Martin is available to stream on ITVX
