A day after a 20-year-old undergraduate student of BITS Pilani’s Goa campus was found in his hostel room in a suspected suicide, the institution said it is conducting an internal inquiry into the matter. The student’s family has urged authorities to take stringent steps to prevent such incidents in the future. The student’s sister told The Indian Express, “My brother is gone now. The loss that I have suffered, my family has suffered…is irreparable. But, I want that they (the authorities) do something about such incidents so that no other student has to take such a step.” This is the third case of suspected suicide reported at the Goa campus of the institute in the past five months. We know such things are confidential, but maybe the parents should be kept in the loop. If we were informed, we would have done something,” she said. “I spoke to him on Monday. The next day, he sent me a text that he was busy. On Wednesday, he did not answer his phone the entire day. I assumed he must be studying in the library, since exams are ongoing,” the sister said. In a letter addressed to the Dean, the student’s mother said her son’s academic performance had been deteriorating for some time, but this was not shared with the parents. An official from the college administration confirmed that the student’s mother has written to the authorities and sought an inquiry. The official said that after the two previous incidents of suicide on campus, the college took several measures, including providing counselling sessions. “We held meetings with students and asked wardens to be stationed in the hostel block for additional time, especially during exams. Efforts are also being made to relieve academic stress on students,” the official said on the condition of anonymity. We recognise how difficult and unsettling this time is for every member of our community, especially for students who were close to him.” “The campus authorities are in close coordination with the police, who have taken charge of the situation. BITS Pilani is conducting an internal inquiry in this matter,” the statement said.
