Stockport resident Karen Goodwin has credited the Good Samaritan with saving her life after he furiously banged on her front door to alert her to the blaze, which saw a baby taken to hospital. ‌ Unsuspecting Karen, who lives on Windsor Grove on Romiley's Cherry Tree estate, had jumped into the shower when the drama unfolded on Thursday morning. ‌ And it was only thanks to her unnamed neighbour's banging and shouting that she realised a tree in her garden had gone up in flames and was burning ferociously. There's a fire in the front garden. Quick! Come on! You don't have time, get everybody out quickly." "Get out now, there's a fire. You're going to have to come out" he adds. He checks there is no one else in the property as he leads her to safety. ‌ "The bloke that saved me, he's an absolute hero," Karen said. "He just came running up my path, rang the door and opened the door. The tree ablaze on Thursday morning (Image: Submitted ) "He just shouted get out, there's a fire, leave everything, get out. I was in the shower in the morning and he was banging on my door." ‌ She added: "I just grabbed my dressing gown, ran down the stairs. I could barely walk I was that shocked. "He helped me out. There were two nurses passing by who came up and stood with me, they were so good." Outside, other neighbours tried to pour water on the tree as flames lapped up the length of it. Locals are said to have grabbed hosepipes and buckets of water in a bid to control it before fire crews arrived. ‌ One was James Gould. He said: ""There were about 50 people who all pulled together," he said. "It was a really fast response from the fire service" he added. Three fire engines rushed to the scene and closed off the road while they used an aerial appliance to tackle the blaze. ‌ Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed that a 37-year-old woman and an eight-month-old baby were treated for burn injuries at the scene by a fire service trauma technician. The North West Ambulance Service has also confirmed that one patient was taken to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH) for 'further treatment.' A GMFRS spokesperson said: “At around 10am yesterday (Thursday 1 May) three fire engines from Marple, Offerton and Hyde, along with the aerial appliance from Whitehill fire station, attended a fire on Windsor Grove in Stockport. Article continues below “The fire involved a tree in the front garden of a property. "Crews extinguished the fire, and an adult and a child were treated by a fire service trauma technician at the scene, before they were handed to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. “A fire safety assessment was completed at the property, and crews were in attendance for around four hours.”
