The End of an Island Dream: 'Almost Paradise' Canceled After Two Seasons

In a bittersweet turn of events for fans of tropical adventures, the action drama series Almost Paradise has been officially canceled after two seasons, as confirmed by TVLine. This news marks the end of a journey that began with great promise and excitement.
Executive producer Dean Devlin, known for his previous successes, expressed his disappointment regarding the show's cancellation. Speaking to TV Insider, he stated, “We’re looking for a new home. I’ve never had a show that was this successful and yet couldn’t stay at the same place more than one season.” This sentiment reflects the frustrations of many creators who pour their energy into developing content that resonates with audiences but struggle to find a stable platform.
Almost Paradise made its debut on WGN America back in 2020 before transitioning to Amazon Freevee for its second season, which premiered in July 2023. However, its fate took a turn when Freevee was shuttered last year, leading to a domino effect that ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the beloved series.
Despite this setback, Devlin remains optimistic about the future of Almost Paradise. He noted, “As you can tell from Leverage: Redemption, I don’t give up. So at some point, Almost Paradise will be back. I just don’t know when.” His determination is evident, especially given his history with reboots and revivals, as evidenced by his work on the long-running procedural Leverage, which was successfully revived by Freevee in 2021.
The series starred Christian Kane, who also had a significant role in Leverage, as the main character Alex Walker. Alex is portrayed as a former U.S. DEA agent who, after suffering a betrayal from his partner and battling severe health issues, is forced into an early retirement. Seeking a quieter life, he relocates to a picturesque tropical island in the Philippines, only to find himself embroiled once again in a perilous world filled with crime and danger. His interactions with local law enforcement, including characters played by Samantha Richelle and Art Acuña, often pull him back into thrilling, life-threatening scenarios.
Almost Paradise was co-created by Dean Devlin and Gary Rosen, who also served as co-showrunners. Kane continues to be involved in the television landscape, as he stars in Leverage: Redemption, with the third season set to premiere on April 17. Additionally, he is slated to reprise his role as Jacob Stone in the upcoming series The Librarians: The Next Chapter, demonstrating his enduring popularity and talent.
As fans reflect on the cancellation, many may wonder about what could have been for Almost Paradise. Will viewers miss the exciting escapades and the vibrant backdrop of the Philippines? The door may not be completely closed, and there is hope that the series might find a new platform in the future.
