The Wizard of Oz Returns to the Spotlight at Las Vegas Sphere

Following the success of the first Wicked movie and the anticipation surrounding its sequel, excitement for the Wizard of Oz has surged. The original 1939 film, a timeless classic, celebrated its 85th anniversary last year, reigniting interest in its enchanting world. Now, the magic of Oz is set to be reimagined in a spectacular way, thanks to the Las Vegas Sphere.
Starting in August, the Sphere—a state-of-the-art entertainment venue—will host a “fully immersive experience” featuring the beloved film. This experience will utilize the venue's expansive 160,000-square-foot screen, offering viewers a truly unique way to engage with the story. Developed in collaboration with tech giants Google, Warner Bros. Discovery, and the innovative studio Magnopus, this new adaptation of the film promises to be “enhanced” with cutting-edge technology while honoring the original film's integrity. While specific immersive elements remain under wraps, the anticipation is building among fans and tech enthusiasts alike.
Notably, this presentation marks a significant shift in the Sphere's programming. Traditionally known for hosting concerts and live events, the inclusion of Wizard of Oz signals a move towards original entertainment experiences. Sphere Entertainment's CEO, Jim Dolan, has expressed enthusiasm for this direction, stating that these immersive experiences will provide “a diverse slate that leverages Sphere’s power as an experiential medium.” The Wizard of Oz will be the first classic film to receive this new immersive treatment at the Las Vegas location, setting a precedent for future projects.
Alongside Wicked, which has captivated audiences with its fresh take on the Oz narrative, the Sphere plans to introduce other experiences, including From the Edge. These initiatives are designed to push the boundaries of entertainment and enrich the visitor experience in ways that have yet to be fully realized.
If you're intrigued by the idea of stepping into the vibrant world of Wizard of Oz, mark your calendars: the immersive experience is set to open at the Sphere on August 28.
