HBO's acclaimed anthology series, The White Lotus, has garnered a reputation for evoking strong emotional responses from its viewers, and season three star Jason Isaacs is no exception. Despite knowing the fate of his character, Timothy Ratliff, for over a year, Isaacs found himself unexpectedly moved while watching the finale alongside his fellow cast members. It felt like the end of summer camp when youre 11, but Im not 11, he remarked in an interview with Business Insider on Tuesday. I was surprised by how emotional I got; we were all on the edge of tears that night.
The season finale, which aired on Sunday, was filled with poignant interactions and shocking deathsmoments that the cast has had to keep under wraps. Interestingly, even the actors, who dedicated approximately seven months filming in the picturesque landscapes of Thailand, were left in suspense about how their characters' narratives would conclude. Many scenes they filmed were ultimately omitted from the final cut, adding to the intrigue.
On Monday's episode of The White Lotus Official Podcast, creator and director Mike White disclosed that the original 90-minute finale included a significant scene where Timothys daughter Piper, portrayed by Sarah Catherine Hook, would have lost her virginity to Belinda's son, Zion, played by Nicholas Duvernay. It would have added like 10 minutes to the thing, explained White, which ultimately led to its removal. Isaacs humorously responded, Im glad. I dont want to see my daughter have sex.
Reflecting on the editing process, Isaacs elaborated, Everybody had things that felt like limbs and organs chopped off, acknowledging the emotional toll of losing scenes they had worked hard on. He expressed deep respect for Whites writing, stating, You cant bear to lose a semicolon. Ultimately, you have to trust that he made the right decision in the edit. When asked if he had filmed any major moments that were cut, Isaacs enthusiastically replied, Oh God, yes! He pointed out, however, that his characters storyline remained more intact compared to others.
For me, because Tim's having such a catastrophically terrible time, I missed a couple of big laughs I had; everybody else got laughs, Isaacs noted, indicating that his onscreen wife, Parker Posey, was particularly favored for humor. The actor relished the moments when White would burst into laughter behind the monitor, often during his scenes. There were a couple I know that I had that are gone, he added with a hint of nostalgia.
Despite the complex and tragic dynamics portrayed by the Ratliff family, Isaacs developed a strong bond with his co-stars off-screen, particularly with Hook, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Sam Nivola, who played his character's sons, Saxon and Lochlan. He shared that the four actors maintain a group chat to stay connected and regularly check in on each other's lives.
In a related note, Aimee Lou Wood, who portrayed the beloved character Chelsea alongside Walton Goggins' Rick, recently commented that the cast accidentally adopted a Method acting approach while filming the eight-episode sequence, creating a unique blend of fiction and reality. Isaacs acknowledged that while this method may have fostered a really intense intimacy among some cast members, it didnt necessarily apply to everyone.
I think shes speaking for herself and Walton. They had their own storyline, which is very different from ours, he explained. We were not Method. We just hung out a lot together, had a great time, went out on boats, went on trips, ate together, watched movies, and played cards. I dont know if that feeds into the work or not.
The entirety of The White Lotus is currently available for streaming on Max, allowing fans to experience the shows intricate storytelling and emotional depth.
