OHGEESY and Fenix Flexin: A New Era for Shoreline Mafia

The dynamic duo of OHGEESY and Fenix Flexin is back in the spotlight, showcasing their evolution both as individuals and artists. Known for their influential contributions to West Coast trap music over the past decade, the pair, once part of the larger group Shoreline Mafia, have shifted their lifestyle dramatically. They have swapped late-night studio sessions for early morning workouts and replaced indulgent nights with nutritious Erewhon smoothies. Interestingly, OHGEESY has recently developed a taste for jazz and classical music, signaling a broader artistic influence.
It has been nearly five years since the release of their last studio album, Mafia Bidness, which debuted in 2020. Since then, the group has transformed from a quartet, which included members Rob Vicious and Master Kato, into a focused duo. Now they are more committed than ever, ready to pick up where they left off, but with a newfound confidence and maturity.
Prioritizing the mental allows us to do everything better. Were growing up, and the music is growing with us, Flexin explained, emphasizing the depth of their personal and professional growth.
With the upcoming release of their highly anticipated new project Back in Bidnesscelebrated with a collaboration with the local brand Born X Raisedand their first live performance together in five years at the iconic Coachella festival, the duo shared their thoughts on their journey back to the music scene.
When asked about the feeling in the days leading up to the album release, Fenix Flexin expressed profound optimism. I feel like were about to be at the biggest point in our career very shortly. Im trying to harness that star power like a surge of energy going through me. I feel like a real rapper, he said.
OHGEESY elaborated on why the time is right for a reunion. We were locked in on our solo careers the whole time we were apart. Were both at different stages in our lives than we were five years ago. Were older and wiser now, and everything just feels right. This maturity feeds into their artistic process, leading to a more collaborative and enjoyable recording environment.
Fenix Flexin pointed out that creating together is significantly more fun than working on solo projects. When were together, its easier to make good party music. Solo projects feel more like work, he stated. Their chemistry, which Flexin described as magical, allows them to effortlessly blend their unique styles.
The duo credits their long-standing friendship and deep understanding of each others musical styles for their seamless collaboration. When we started making music, it was together. It wasnt until after that we started coming into our individual voices. We know each others rhyme patterns and cadences so well that its almost subconscious, said Flexin.
As they reflect on their individual strengths, Flexin admires OHGEESYs knack for hooks, stating, Bro has them hooks. It takes me a long time to get a good hook. He just goes in like boom. 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, OHGEESY praised Flexins energetic style, acknowledging how their contrasting energies create a perfect balance.
Regarding their new project, OHGEESY confirmed that this album is a continuation of Mafia Bidness, stating, Were picking up right where we left off, and were doing it better. This fresh perspective is reflected in their creative process, which has shifted significantly since their previous work. Were so locked in on our health this time, which has played into the creative process, he noted.
Flexin added, Back then, we were partying all the time. This time, were in the gym. Were eating right. Were picking each other up. Prioritizing the mental allows us to do everything better. This focus on health and well-being not only enhances their music but also fosters personal growth.
The duos collaboration with Born X Raised holds special significance for them. Shoutout Geesy, man. Those were all his designs, Flexin remarked, referring to the late co-founder Spanto, whose influence on the brand and their lives is still felt deeply. To see it come to fruition was amazing, he added.
When discussing their fashion sense, Flexin encouraged fans to wear what they love, rather than following trends. OHGEESY shared his appreciation for the local brand GALLERY DEPT., emphasizing a personal connection to its Hollywood roots.
As for the album art, OHGEESY revealed its a tribute to a classic Capone-N-Noreaga album, showcasing their love for 1990s and early 2000s music. When asked about standout tracks, Flexin highlighted Tusi and Too Often, while OHGEESY favored Back 2 Back as his all-time favorite.
Musically, OHGEESY described their latest sound as a mix of trap and party music, appealing to a wide audience. Its for everybody. Its a well-rounded project, Flexin added, indicating their aim to reach listeners from all walks of life.
In terms of current musical influences, Flexin is enjoying the new Playboi Carti album and house music, while OHGEESY has been gravitating towards jazz and classical tunes during his drives, alongside works from artists like Central Cee and Lil Durk.
When discussing their approach to live performances, OHGEESY stated, We just have to go out there and do what we do to the highest quality. Flexin noted the natural ease they have after years of performing together, although they are putting in extra rehearsal time for Coachella, which they believe will enhance their show.
As for setlist choices, OHGEESY hinted at the inclusion of classic tracks, assuring fans, We gotta do some of the classics, of course. With their revival firmly underway, fans eagerly await what this new chapter holds for Shoreline Mafia.
