(Image: BBC ) A Gavin and Stacey star has revealed that he ‘suggested’ turning the beloved comedy series into a movie in news that will excite fans. Returning for its first episode since 2019 on Christmas, 19.11 million people tuned in to watch it within the first seven days of its premiere. Article continues below The 90 minute 2024 special resolved the cliff-hanger from five years before, when Nessa (Ruth Jones) asked Smithy (James Corden) to marry her. Fans experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as Smithy weighed up whether to follow his head and marry Sonia (Laura Aikman), or his heart and finally get his happy ever after with Nessa. Despite the episode seemingly tying a bow on everything, it was the highest watched TV episode of the year in the UK. Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday morning (April 15), Mick Shipman actor Larry Lamb revealed how an interaction with a fan led him to asking the BBC director general Tim Davie to greenlight a movie. He recalled: “I spoke to Tim Davie, who’s the boss man, and I suggested what somebody had said to me. “I said, ‘Why don’t you just take this and just go and put it in a cinema?’, so that’s been turned all the way around to where I’m saying that it is going to be a film. The series ran for three seasons and had two Christmas specials (Image: PA ) “I suggested to him that somebody suggested to me, ‘Why don’t you take what we’ve just done and put it in cinemas?’, that’s it.” Larry added: “And he just looked at me as much as to say, ‘This is all I need, an actor telling me how to do my job, thanks very much, move on’.” Asked what a film version of Gavin and Stacey would look like, Larry replied: “You’re trying to get me in trouble with the boss again, just keep watching.” A major scene which saw former EastEnders star Larry’s Mick telling Smithy not to marry Sonia has been nominated for the 2025 Bafta memorable moment award. Prior to airing its two Christmas specials, Gavin and Stacey spanned for three seasons and followed the lives of Essex-born Gavin and his Welsh wife Stacey and their friends and family, after they first met on work phone calls. Article continues below In a BBC documentary about the final episode, James Corden revealed he and Ruth Jones almost decided against bringing the show back in 2019. "We were like, 'this is rubbish, this is awful, it's terrible'. I remember saying to each other, well, thank god we didn't call the BBC'. “So we ate dinner in my kitchen, and I said, 'Look, I think we probably owe it to the show to go back in and talk about why it's bad and say goodbye to it',” he said.
