More info If Manchester United were not involved in the Europa League, the chances are a lot of their supporters would have zoned out by now. Sunday's 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United marked the Reds' 14th Premier League defeat of the season, leaving them 14th in the table with six games to play. It offers confirmation that this summer's transfer window cannot come quickly enough. United must oversee another squad overhaul this summer to fine-tune the squad to head coach Ruben Amorim's needs, meaning fresh faces must be drafted in ahead of the start next season. However, United will first have to cut their cloth to make room and to be able fund new additions. With the club targeting at least ten departures, at least 12 players are at risk of leaving the club this summer. Tom Heaton - release Veteran goalkeeper Heaton turned 39 today (Tuesday) and last made a first-team appearance for United in February 2023. His contract is up this summer and he should be released. It is possible he may decide to hang up his boots this summer and call time on a fantastic playing career that has featured two promotions and a League Cup triumph. (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images.) Altay Bayindir - sell United signed Bayindir from Fenerbahce for just £4.3million in September 2023 and has played for the club just eight times. Despite making his first Premier League start against Newcastle, it is possible it may be his last. He is never going to become United's first-choice goalkeeper and the prospect of the club signing a new goalkeeper to challenge Andre Onana this summer means he should be offloaded. He ought to push for a move in pursuit of game time ahead of next year's World Cup. Victor Lindelof - release United exercised the one-year option on Lindelof's contract to keep him until June 2025 in December 2023. On reflection, it was a mistake. The Swede has outstayed his welcome at Old Trafford and should be moved on at the end of this season when his deal expires. United are well-stocked at centre-back and have exciting prospects in Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Godwill Kukonki in their ranks. Jonny Evans - release Like Heaton, Evans is another player who could decide to retire at the end of this season. His contract is up and it is not going to be renewed. He has missed United's last 22 matches, last appearing in the matchday squad when United lost 2-0 to Wolves at Molineux on Boxing Day. He was re-signed almost two years ago to provide depth and cover, but United have since beefed up their centre-back options. Luke Shaw - sell Shaw's injury record means United should consider cashing-in on him this summer. He has played just four times this season and has not started a game for United since February last year. (Image: Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images.) His ability to play at both centre-back and left-back make him a versatile option that could be attractive to both Amorim and prospective suitors, but his injury record does raise question marks. If United intend on selling him, they could find offers below their valuation because of his injury record. Tyrell Malacia - sell Having signed Patrick Dorgu in February and Harry Amass now entering the equation, it is hard to see Malacia having a future at Old Trafford beyond this summer. He is currently out on loan at Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven and he has not set the world alight back in his homeland. It makes sense for both parties to go their separate ways this summer and move on from each other. Furthermore, he is not a wing-back, meaning he does not suit Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system. Casemiro - sell Despite his improved performances in the last few months, particularly in the Europa League, Casemiro is a player United should be striving to move on this summer. It is understood he will be available for transfer and United will need to bank around £15m to sell him to avoid a PSR loss. The Saudi Arabian market could produce a buyer for him, with similar players of his age and profile flocking to the Arab state in previous years. He did a sterling job in his first season at United, playing a key role in their 2022/23 success, but he needs moving on. Christian Eriksen - release Like Casemiro, Eriksen enjoyed an excellent debut season at United, helping to fix their long-standing midfield issues. However, he was never going to be a long-term solution and he has already acknowledged that he is set to move on at the end of this season when his contract expires. (Image: James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images.) He is now 33 and United need younger legs in midfield. He will be able to leave this summer with his head held high after three years worth of service at Old Trafford. Ajax and Brentford will be among his potential suitors. Antony - sell Antony joined Real Betis on loan in the January transfer window after falling out-of-favour at Old Trafford and he has quickly got back up to speed. He has scored four goals and claimed four assists in 15 games for the Spanish outfit. Antony is under contract at United until 2027, meaning the club would need to sell him for just over £32m to avoid a PSR loss after signing him for £81.3m in September 2022. Betis have already expressed interest in keeping him and United will be hoping he scores a few more goals between now and the end of the season to drive up his valuation. Jadon Sancho - sell Sancho's United career failed to get off the ground under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag, meaning almost every supporter would be glad to see the back of him this summer. He is currently out on loan at Chelsea and they have an obligation to sign him this summer for £20m. The Blues may pay a penalty fee not to turn his loan into a permanent deal, but even if that happens, United will still push for a sale. Borussia Dortmund have been linked with re-signing him in the event of Chelsea pulling the plug on the deal. Marcus Rashford - sell Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan in January and they have the option to turn his stay into a permanent one this summer. He has scored just three goals for the Midlands outfit so far, meaning it remains to be seen if they will activate that option. (Image: James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images.) If they decide not to, United must explore other avenues to sell Rashford. He is not part of Amorim's plans and it makes no sense for him to be retained. Both parties need to cut ties permanently. Joshua Zirkzee - sell Zirkzee was signed last summer to be a support striker to Rasmus Hojlund. However, it soon became evident that he is not a striker, and is much better operating as a No.10. To his credit, the former Bologna man has improved and offered value when playing as one of the two playmakers behind the striker, but he is not a long-term option for United. If interest arises and offers are forthcoming, United should consider cashing-in.
