BougeRVs Electric Foldable Wagon: A New Era in Heavy-Duty Hauling

In the world of innovative transportation solutions, BougeRV has introduced an impressive product: the Electric Foldable Wagon, which has caught the attention of many outdoor enthusiasts and digital nomads alike. The company, known for its luxurious camping gear, aims to make life easier for those who frequently transport heavy loads in various terrains.
As a deputy editor and co-founder of Verge, I find myself with a rather unique expertise in folding wagons after spending over two decades as a tech journalist. This has led me to test a vast array of folding carts, from budget options retailing for around $40 to high-end models costing up to $800. However, nothing has impressed me quite like BougeRV's Electric Foldable Wagon, particularly when it comes to hauling substantial weightsup to 200kg (approximately 440 pounds)over challenging inclines.
Priced at $399.99, this wagon is certainly an investment, but for those who regularly carry heavy loads across hilly landscapes, its benefits can outweigh its quirks. I tested the wagon during my trips to my surf shack, located just a kilometer from the nearest parking lot. In the past, I have struggled with steep inclines that left me panting and exhausted, but the BougeRV wagon completely transformed this experience.
Equipped with dual rear-wheel drive motors, the wagon can easily tackle 5- and 10-percent grade hills without significant effort from the user. When I engaged the motors, I found that the wagon moved effortlessly under its own power, requiring only steering on my part. This feature alone might justify the price for many users.
The wagon boasts a generous 180-liter capacity, which can be expanded to 250 liters by opening its tailgate. This added space proves invaluable when carrying larger items, such as kiteboards or deflated standup paddle boards. Additionally, the wagon's sturdy design allows for the transport of multiple small children, a full-sized person sitting cross-legged, or even an elderly dog along with their supplies.
Despite its remarkable features, the wagon has some limitations that users should consider. For instance, while the two rear-wheel drive motors are quiet and produce 11Nm of torque, this is not an overwhelming amount of power. Consequently, the wagon still relies significantly on human effort to get underway. During my tests, I found that the medium and high-speed settings were most compatible with my usual pace on flat surfaces.
The innovative design allows for electronic reverse functionality, making it easier to back the wagon into tight spaces. However, the operation of the cart can take some getting used to. It features two yellow throttle levers for controlling forward and reverse speeds, along with two red sliders to activate the electronic brake. This setup allows for one-handed control, which is convenient, but it does require a bit of practice to master.
Notably, the wagon is advertised as weather-resistant, capable of handling light rain and damp conditions. However, the company does not provide a specific IP rating for water or dust ingress, leaving some users skeptical. I personally left the wagon outside overnight during mild rain and sandstorms, and it performed admirably the following day. Nevertheless, if I were to invest in a $400 wagon, I would likely purchase a simple cover to protect it from the elements.
The wagon's throttle and braking system can also feel a bit erratic, especially on slopes. In particular, I discovered that the electronic brake did not function optimally when descending moderate hills. Instead, I found it easier to disengage the power and rely on the wagons physical brakes to prevent it from rolling away.
In terms of terrain, the wheels performed well on various surfaces, including paved roads, cobblestones, and gravel. However, when confronted with deeper sand, the wagon would often stall, indicating that the design may benefit from a more traditional tire setup to enhance traction and reduce vibrations.
The BougeRV wagon is powered by a compact 133Wh rechargeable battery, with claims of a maximum range of 12 miles (over 19km) on a single charge. The removable battery can be charged via USB-C and even serves as a power bank for other devices, a feature that many users may find beneficial.
After testing the wagon for a distance of 5km, I observed that the battery was still showing over 75% capacity, a promising result given the weight of the loads I was moving. Overall, I am particularly impressed with BougeRVs Electric Foldable Wagon. While it does have its flaws, the ease of transporting heavy items over steep hills makes it a worthwhile investment for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike.
