Nachawati Law Group: Advocates for Justice for Over 5,000 Cancer Victims Amid Setbacks

DALLAS, April 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a determined response to a recent legal setback, trial lawyers representing more than 5,000 victims of cancer have pledged to continue their fight for justice. This commitment comes after a federal judge dismissed an attempt to revive Johnson & Johnson's third proposal for a global settlement concerning claims related to the companys talcum powder products.
On April 17, 2025, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez ruled against the company's effort to bring back its proposed multibillion-dollar settlement during a court session that followed a two-week trial held in March. In his ruling, Judge Lopez firmly declined the requests to reopen the case, which sought to either amend previous deficiencies in the bankruptcy petition or to refer the matter for mediation.
Majed Nachawati, the founder of the Dallas-based Nachawati Law Group, expressed his appreciation for the judge's adherence to legal principles grounded in factual evidence. He referred to the ongoing legal battle as historic, emphasizing the extensive implications it carries for the victims involved. Nachawati stated, Our firm has foughtand will continue to fightfor justice. We remain committed to exploring whether a fair resolution is in the best interest of our clients.
Approximately 90,000 women have come forward with lawsuits asserting that Johnson & Johnsons talcum powder products are linked to their cancer diagnoses. In a bid to manage its substantial legal liabilities, the pharmaceutical giant has employed a controversial bankruptcy maneuver known as the Texas Two-Step. This strategy involves the formation of a separate subsidiary that would take on the liabilities associated with the claims, followed by the filing of that subsidiary into a prepackaged bankruptcy plan. This plan included a proposed $9 billion settlement intended to compensate victims while simultaneously protecting Johnson & Johnson from any further liability. However, its important to note that federal courts have rejected three separate attempts by the company to reach a settlement through bankruptcy.
The ongoing litigation is cataloged under case number In re: Red River Talc, SDTX, No. 24-90505.
