US Department of State Advises Caution for Travelers Heading to Bangladesh

The United States Department of State has taken significant measures to ensure the safety of American citizens traveling abroad by reissuing its travel advisory for Bangladesh. This advisory, updated on April 18, 2023 (US time), strongly urges Americans to reconsider traveling to the country due to ongoing concerns over civil unrest, crime rates, and threats of terrorism.
The travel advisory maintains a 'Level 3: Reconsider Travel' designation for most regions of Bangladesh, indicating that while travel is still possible, it should be approached with caution. However, the advisory takes a more severe stance on the Chittagong Hill Tractscomprising the districts of Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarbanwhere the warning is classified as 'Level 4: Do Not Travel'. This classification reflects the heightened risks associated with communal violence, potential terrorist activities, kidnappings, and persistent political unrest in the area.
While the frequency of large-scale violent confrontations has seen a decline in recent times, the situation remains volatile. Demonstrations and protests continue to occur regularly across various locations in Bangladesh. The State Department has specifically cautioned travelers that even seemingly peaceful gatherings can rapidly devolve into chaotic situations, and therefore, they are advised to steer clear of all political events and large public assemblies.
In light of the security concerns, U.S. government employees stationed in Bangladesh are subject to stringent travel restrictions. Their movement within Dhaka is largely limited to the diplomatic enclave, and any travel beyond this area requires prior authorization. Exceptions are made for trips to Coxs Bazar and Sylhet, which are perceived as relatively safer destinations within the country.
Additionally, the U.S. Embassy has highlighted the challenges it faces in providing assistance to American citizens during emergencies, especially in areas outside Dhaka where local infrastructure and emergency services may be lacking. This limitation makes it crucial for travelers to be well-prepared in advance.
The State Department has urged American travelers who still opt to visit Bangladesh to take several vital precautions. One of the key recommendations is to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows travelers to receive timely updates and alerts while ensuring that the U.S. Embassy can locate them in case of emergencies.
In situations involving theft or robbery, the U.S. government advises travelers to prioritize their safety and avoid resistance, as personal safety should always take precedence. Additionally, considering the deficiencies in local healthcare infrastructure, Americans are strongly encouraged to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuations.
Before departing, travelers are also advised to diligently review the latest U.S. Country Security Report and the current health guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure they are fully informed and prepared for their journey.
