More info A bloke snapped up a World War I shipwreck for a mere £300 after spotting an advert on Facebook Marketplace, despite its perilous location off the Cornish coast. Dominic Robinson now has the dubious honour of being the legal owner of the sunken Almond Branch shipwreck much to his wife's chagrin. The once defensibly-armed British Merchant vessel has lain in ruins 58 metres underwater since its demise. Dominic, 53, admits that his wife Suzi, also 53, was less than thrilled about his hefty 3,000-tonne acquisition. "When I bought it my wife was furious," said Dominic. "She said 'what a waste of money - I just hope he doesn't bring it up and put it in the garden.'". Yet for Dominic, the allure of the Almond Branch remains strong, reports Cornwall Live. He said: "It's interesting for loads of reasons but one is that it's actually upside down." Having acquired the historical wreck from another Cornwall resident in January, Dominic recently checked out the rusty remains with his pal Rich Ayrton. (Image: Jampress) The new owner explained: "It's a pile of heavily corroded iron so the only real reason to buy it is for bragging rights. It's not widely known but shipwrecks always have an owner in the UK." He went on: "It's possible for private individuals to buy and sell them. Although I can't stop people from diving and exploring the wreck, if they were to take anything from it then I am the legal owner." Dominic made waves online after sharing a video of his dive to a shipwreck, garnering 117,000 views. The vessel, built by William Doxford and Sons, met its end on November 27, 1917, torpedoed during WWI by the German submarine UB-57, according to Wrecksite. The YouTube sensation, with over 9,000 followers, received numerous comments from viewers who were thrilled with his underwater adventure. Nick commented: "Most people dream of buying boats that float, and then are disappointed by how much work/money they are to maintain. You went the smart route; buy a boat that's already sunk. Genius. Well played." (Image: Jampress) Another viewer expressed their enjoyment: "Enjoyed the diving video and backstory as usual, both complimented each other once again. Thanks for the ride. "That is some great information to know. I was not aware you could purchase a shipwreck. Pretty cool," remarked another. Craig focused on a specific aspect: "Great to see you spent some time looking at the engines, that's what I am mainly interested in but they are often overlooked." Shaun praised Dominics recent acquisition: "Great video, amazing dive Dom, incredible story of the wreck, congratulations on purchasing it."
