When United Kingdom native Dan Morfitt walked by a green phone booth door at the corner of the Indio Central Market, he knew he had to check it out and see what was inside. “I know what the front of a pub looks like and when we saw it we had to head towards it,” he said. Once inside, pushing on the phone booth wall revealed a long brick hallway leading to another world inside the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Morfitt was transported into an old-style British bar dubbed The Old Phone Pub, one of the various hidden bars that pop-up each year at the festival. “I love it, but there’s too much Ipswich Town memorabilia,” he said with a laugh, referring to the soccer team from Ipswich, England. That’s because Ipswich Town Football Club superfan, singer Ed Sheeran helped design the Coachella bar after it was announced he would be a surprise guest during weekend two of the music festival. “It’s an English pub. You got some Guinness in there, got some good cocktails, some great music, it’s just a vibe. It’s the type of place where you walk into and you think to yourself there’s no way they just built it, this looks like it’s been here for years,” said Adrian Garcia, the food and beverage director for Goldenvoice Festivals, who puts together the hidden speakeasies. The Old Phone Pub was only open for weekend two to coincide with Sheeran’s performance and built in just four days. According to Garcia, Sheeran visited the pub Saturday before his performance in the Mojave tent. While the pub is relatively easy to find with the name of the bar emblazoned at the top of the phone booth door, people had to work a little harder to the other three speakeasies. The hidden bars include Parisian-inspired Golden Hour, Agava-driven outdoor bar Mixteca, and the VIP Tiki Bar. Golden Hour is accessed through a mirror located by the Spectra building on a wall covered with faux grass. Once people spot the door, a long hallway lit by flameless candles that slowly flicker leads into a dark lounge adding to the chill mood. On Saturday afternoon people sat along a long couch and ordered drinks like Perdido en Paris, a tequila infused ginger kombucha, and Expresso Au Lait, a vodka coffee. Near the Yuma tent, Mixteca offers a completely different vibe. The outdoor bar is simple and fun, with a few wood chairs under the shade of palm trees and Latin music playing in the background. The exclusive Tiki Bar offers the most tranquil views and is located in the 12 Peaks VIP area. The bar is accessible through a winding path that is surrounded by trees and greenery. The path then opens to reveal an artificial lake complete with geese swimming. The bar is a hut that sits in front of the lake where people can have tiki drinks as they rake in the view.
