Ruben Amorim got his Ole Gunnar Solskjaer moment at Man United - but it's what comes next that counts Manchester United produced a comeback for the ages against Lyon in the Europa League. Now they must capitalise Manchester United stunned Lyon in the Europa League this week It was a comeback even the kings of comebacks would have been proud of. Manchester United rallying from two goals down to eliminate Lyon 7-6 on aggregate in the Europa League on Thursday drew a few comparisons to the Reds side under Sir Alex Ferguson who turned the improbable into probable, culminating in that 1999 Champions League triumph. ‌ Ruben Amorim's vintage are nowhere near that level and perhaps a more useful comparison is that famous win in Paris in 2019. That season, United had also changed managers mid-season and were up against it in the Champions League having lost 2-0 to PSG at Old Trafford. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side stunned the French heavyweights with a 3-1 victory secured by Marcus Rashford's late penalty. Only Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw from that side were in action against Lyon. The feeling will have been similar. "Got some fantastic memories," Solskjaer said after the win over PSG a little over six years ago. "Football, that's what it gives you. It's special when you're a coach or a manager doing it with your staff and players." Article continues below European elation is part of the fabric of United but the true test will be finding the consistency to make these memories more often, to go from a moments team to a trophy-winning team. In 2019, United promptly lost their next game and won a miserable two out of the remaining 12, exiting the Champions League in the next round without a goal over two legs against Barcelona. They were dumped out of the FA Cup by Wolves, who also beat them in the league, while they were pummelled 4-0 by Everton, failed to beat a desperately poor Huddersfield Town side who only claimed 16 points all season, and ended the campaign with a meek 2-0 reverse to relegated Cardiff. ‌ The memory of PSG quickly became just that, a memory. For all the joy and delight that Thursday night offered United fans, if this season - that is already largely one to forget - peters out with whimper against Athletic Bilbao next month then the Lyon victory will ultimately count for nothing. "When you score two goals in the end, like that, you hear the sound of the fans and it pays off any suffering or frustration you have during the season. And we know that we are underperforming. We deserve all the critics, but we still have time to make something special of this season, so we have to think like that and to be positive," said Amorim after the victory. "The character of the players was the main thing. We have to focus as we are going to the semi-finals and you don't win anything (for that)." ‌ Amorim will want to ensure the tremendous turnaround ends with something tangible and a trophy. Those are the memories United want. --- Here at the Manchester Evening News, we’re dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester United coverage and analysis.
