Nothing quite set the tone for a humdrum home match as Ruben Amorim making Victor Lindelof the Manchester United captain. The good news is United cannot be relegated. They are mathematically safe, even in defeat. Ipswich Town's loss to Arsenal at Portman Road ensured that. United are still yet to hit the 40-point target. That is of little consolation after a 15th league defeat of the season for 14th-placed United. The last time that happened was in 1989-90. United ended that campaign 13th and salvaged it with a cup final win in May. Their fans will cling to those omens as they hopefully plan for two trips to Bilbao in May. Apart from Ipswich and Brentford, every top-flight team has won at Old Trafford since United's era of dominance ended in 2013. Wolves, like Newcastle, completed the domestic double against United. That last happened in 1979-80. Amorim's body language and intensity in the technical area were no different against Wolves. The play on the pitch was. The meaninglessness of the fixture could be gauged by Amorim's choice of temporary skipper, with Bruno Fernandes a rare substitute. Fernandes was serenaded by the Stretford End as he warmed up in the first half. So were Harry Maguire and Casemiro, the other lions against Lyon. Maguire has never had his name chanted so loudly at Old Trafford. United supporters were still revelling in the improbable comeback on Thursday evening. That made this mundane and meandering inevitable. Andre Onana could have watched it unfold whilst sitting in a deckchair in the Stretford sun until Pablo Sarabia lined up his free kick in the 77th minute. It was unsaveable. They sang 'Follow, follow, follow, 'cause United are going to Bilbao' in the early knockings. The United denizens were too fraught with nerves to bellow that three days earlier. After Harry Amass became the 253rd academy graduate last month, Tyler Fredricson was the 254th this month. His 27th-minute tackle on Matheus Cunha elicited one of the loudest ovations of the afternoon and sparked a breakaway sharpened by Amass's cross. Jorgen Strand Larsen sportingly patted Fredricson on his way off in the 75th minute. Fredricson did likewise. Fredricson was on the first-team bench as far back as Erik ten Hag's first European match in charge against Real Sociedad in September 2022. He is another member of the triumphant 2022 FA Youth Cup squad to debut, joining fellow alumni Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Charlie McNeill and Dan Gore. Amass is shaping up to be a credible competitor for Patrick Dorgu on the left wing next season. Making up for lost time after a propitious pre-season failed to procure a competitive debut under Ten Hag, Amass provided worthy service on his second start at Old Trafford after his Youth Cup appearance as a 16-year-old. Continuing the recent trend of wingers creating chances, Dorgu - back on the right-hand side for the first time since his debut - whipped in two inviting inswingers that both bounced out for goal kicks. Lindelof and Rasmus Hojlund did not so much get in the way of each other as get out of the way for the ball to curl between them. Dorgu was entitled to demand better from teammates. Chido Obi was ordered to warm up again as soon as the second half started and was on the pitch 24 minutes later. It is now one goal in 28 appearances for Hojlund and he has scored in six of the 45 United matches he has played in this season. Hojlund was appreciatively embraced by Amorim after he came off. There was generous applause from the matchgoers. Hojlund's commitment is not the issue. His quality, or distinct lack of it, is. Strand Larsen, Hojlund's opposite number and fellow Scandinavian striker, has 12 league goals to Hojlund's three this season. Sir Jim Ratcliffe was absent again yet there were messages for him in front of the directors' box. Several supporters held banners and signs aloft, expressing disapproval at having their season tickets relocated for next season. "Sir Jim, What has the club we love turned into? You know the price of everything and the value of nothing," read one. 'Save our seats', 'Tourists over fans' and 'Decades of love sold out' were among the stark messages. There were boos for some of the United dignitaries when they emerged for kick off. Lindelof, available again after his sudden departure at half-time on Thursday night, was the longest-serving starter as he approaches his eighth anniversary at United. Luke Shaw was rested entirely after 75 minutes in midweek. It has been more than 14 months since Shaw started a club match and he is now behind Amass, nearly 12 years his junior, in the pecking order. The fixture was another exercise in rotation, so much so that Diogo Dalot and Fernandes were on the bench. Dalot had started every previous league game this season apart from the visit of Southampton, missed through suspension. Coincidentally, it was the first time Fernandes had started on the bench in the Premier League since Wolves visited Old Trafford in January 2022. Like that day, Fernandes was called upon in the second half with the game goalless. It also ended 1-0 to Wolves. Wolves also cannot be relegated. They are level on points with United.
