Barrister 'assaulted' by own client in cells at Nottingham Crown Court

A city-based barrister has allegedly been assaulted by one of his clients in the cells at Nottingham Crown Court. The court heard how Andrew Wesley, of VHS Fletchers, was supposedly kicked to the leg and then pushed to the face by Salmou Njie who he was representing ahead of a sentencing hearing. The 32-year-old defendant, of New Basford, was due to be sentenced on Tuesday, April 22, for charges including affray, assault of an emergency worker and possession of a screwdriver in public. But before he was brought into the dock from custody, Mr Wesley informed the court what he claims had happened to him when he went to see the defendant a short time earlier to take his instructions ahead of mitigation. Judge Stuart Rafferty KC said to Njie, of Cairo Road: “Mr Wesley alleges that this morning he was assaulted by (you) and has asked to be removed from the record (the case). I have given him permission to be removed and I have invited him to consider whether he wishes to bring a criminal complaint again (you). You no longer have legal representation and you need to be legally represented and it is for you to arrange it. I will adjourn this case for 28 days.” The barrister said it was the “first time in 31 years practising law that something like this has ever happened” to him.
