Mason Greenwood hits back after Marseille fans turn on him and make voices heard Mason Greenwood was on the receiving end of a banner from Marseille fans on Saturday, but responded by scoring twice in their 5-1 win over Montpellier Mason Greenwood has netted a club-high 18 league goals for Marseille this season (Image: Getty Images Europe ) Marseille supporters showed their dissatisfaction with Mason Greenwood's performance by unveiling a banner demanding he "get a move on" during their emphatic 5-1 triumph over Montpellier. But the ex-Manchester United forward struck back, netting two goals in the match. Greenwood has demonstrated fluctuating form during his stint in France but boasts an impressive tally of 18 league goals for the season. The 23-year-old has encountered criticism concerning his commitment and approach, despite being the current runner-up for the title of top scorer in Ligue 1. As recent as last month, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed that he anticipated greater effort from Greenwood beyond his goal-scoring achievements, calling for him to "be more consistent and sacrifice more". The fans seemed to share De Zerbi's views, as evidenced by their pointed message to Greenwood and team-mate Luis Henrique, which could be seen either as a plea for increased dedication or a suggestion that the players consider leaving. This season, Greenwood has appeared in 32 matches across all contests, achieving 19 goals in total. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Getafe, where he added 10 goals to his name from 36 appearances. Marseille fans haven't been satisfied with Greenwood's performances as of late Last month, De Zerbi expressed his expectations of Greenwood, stating: " I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough. If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined." This month, further controversy arose following reports of a disagreement between Greenwood and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. It was alleged that Hojbjerg approached chief Medhi Benatia, expressing his reluctance to play alongside Greenwood - a claim which Benatia has since denied. However, it seems De Zerbi is satisfied with Greenwood's response, outlining the steps the player has taken to enhance his overall performance this season. "First of all, it's not something I work on in the moment, during a time when it's more complicated," the Italian said. "I work all season to help the players. You also have to realise that for two years of his career, Mason didn't play. He's very young (23 years old), and being out of action for two years is complicated. He is an introverted person, a little closed, but he has a wonderful family around him, an extraordinary father with whom I worked a lot, he helped me a lot to manage him, with the help also of Mehdi Benatia. So how can we help him? Well sometimes by cuddling him, by taking care of him and sometimes also by being harder so that he continues his progression. "This is the main objective that I have with all my players, beyond all those that we can have with the club, because if I make my players progress we can achieve the club's objectives faster."
