Escape the throngs of camera-wielding tourists in Whitby and discover a serene retreat at Runswick Bay, where a mile of secluded beach and cobalt waters await. Whitby, with its golden sands, charming cobbled streets, and Dracula-inspired allure, draws thousands each year. While Whitby offers sun-soaked relaxation, delectable fish and chips, and the unique Goth Weekend, it's become somewhat overrun by visitors, especially during peak summer months. Crowds can detract from its enchanting atmosphere, leaving you feeling more packed in than relaxed. But just an 18-minute drive away lies the unspoiled beauty of Runswick Bay, a village that has miraculously remained under the radar. "Situated nine miles north of Whitby, Runswick Bay nestles in between Sandsend and Staithes, and forms part of the Cleveland Way which runs along its beach," the local tourist board shares. Known for its Jurassic coast and fossil finds, it's a haven for beachgoers. The immaculate sands of Runswick Bay are perfect for building sandcastles, exploring rock pools, or braving the chilly sea. "Seals, dolphins and whales have all been spotted in the waters, which are excellent for fishing, especially cod and mackerel," the tourist board notes about this coastal gem, reports the Mirror. Dog owners will find it a fantastic spot, as it's one of the few beaches on Yorkshire's coastline that doesn't impose restrictions on dogs. After a day of fun on the beach, a visit to the Royal Hotel for a well-earned pint and meal is highly recommended. The hotel offers stunning views over the expansive bay and rugged cliffs, complemented by home-cooked meals and a selection of local beers. As the sun sets and the temperature drops, guests can cosy up next to the indoor fireplace. Want the latest travel news and best holiday deals delivered directly to your inbox? At a distance of over 270 miles from London, reaching Runswick Bay by car would take nearly five hours. Alternatively, you could take a train to Marske, which takes around three hours and 15 minutes, followed by a 25-minute taxi ride to the coast. If your travel dates are flexible, a single adult fare costs approximately £40. Accommodation in Runswick can be expensive due to its pristine condition and limited competition. For instance, a weekend stay (Friday, April 25-27) at the Puffins Rest holiday home would cost you £395, based on two adults sharing. A larger four-bedroom holiday home is priced at a whopping £761 for the same dates.
