More info Peace lilies, cherished for their stunning white blooms and ability to purify the air, can sometimes be a challenge to keep flowering. However, one expert has shared a care tip that could be a game-changer for extending your peace lily's blooming period. Florist authority David Denyer of Eflorist suggests that the secret to prolonging the life of a peace lily's flowers lies in regular deadheading. He said: "With the right care, a peace lily can last five years or more, but the individual flowers can bloom for eight weeks or more with this one trick: deadheading." By trimming off blooms as they start to wilt at the base, you encourage the plant to invest energy into producing new flowers instead of sustaining the old ones. Deadheading essentially revitalizes your plant by removing spent blooms and allowing for fresh growth. It's a straightforward practice that only requires a few seconds but has the power to extend the display time of your plant significantly. However, if peace lilies aren't experiencing the proper initial conditions to flower, deadheading will be ineffective if no blossoms have manifested, reports the Express. Originating from tropical environments, these plants flourish in brightly lit spaces with indirect sunlight. Excessive sunlight can burn their leaves, while inadequate light may prevent them from flowering altogether. David said: "The number one mistake people make with peace lilies is giving them the wrong amount of light." If you find your peace lily sporting leaves but no blooms, it might be time to move it to a brighter location, ensuring it's not in direct sunlight. A prime spot for these plants is near an east-facing window where they can bask in the gentle morning sun while being protected from the intense afternoon rays. Denyer points out that factors like humidity and proper watering are crucial yet often overlooked. David said: "Humidity is another major factor. Peace lilies are tropical plants, which means dry air can make them struggle. I always recommend misting them regularly or keeping them in naturally humid spaces like bathrooms or kitchens." When it comes to watering, both overwatering and under-watering can cause harm. It's best to let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again and ensure any excess water is drained off to avoid root rot.
