She used to be 'scared of her own shadow' but a 'teenage dream' made her face all her fears She was faced with a huge decision but it paid off Solo traveller Sarah Madigan, from Halewood (Image: Sarah Madigan ) A woman who 'used to be scared of her own shadow' has gone viral on TikTok after facing her fears by travelling the world, all on her own. Solo traveller Sarah Madigan, from Halewood, was always a shy child who was "scared of everything," that was until coronavirus hit the UK and she made a huge decision to move over 15,000km away from everyone she knew and loved. Despite a few bumps in the road the "brave" 28-year-old has now lived in multiple countries and spent over six years jet setting across the world, sharing her incredible journey with millions of people on social media. ‌ Sarah told the ECHO: "I'd done Camp America [a working American summer camp] when I finished uni with a friend, I was so nervous doing it for the first time but I had heard amazing things and it just inspired me to bite the bullet and do it. When everything went into lockdown I tried my hardest to stay there and did for a few months but all the farms - which you have to work at to be able to stay over there - shut, I was so upset having to go home but I flew back. "I didn't want to let covid ruin my time travelling so I applied for another Camp America trip, this time to California. I started in Boston and road tripped across America for 30 days, stopping in different cities, by myself, that same year." By then, Sarah says she "got the bug" for solo travelling and fell in love with exploring the world by herself. So, she applied for another visa, this time for New Zealand and flew over 6,000 miles from California to the island. ‌ Sarah Madigan has spent the last six years travelling the world (Image: Sarah Madigan ) She also started blogging her travels on social media - which has now grown to get over 1,000,000 views on some videos on TikTok - you can follow Sarah's adventures on her TikTok page here. Sarah said: "I was in New Zealand for one year, I came home for Christmas in 2023 and surprised my family, it was lovely. I shared a video of it on TikTok and my dads reaction went viral, everyone was saying it was such a Scouse reaction, it was so funny.” ‌ After Christmas Sarah flew back to New Zealand where she spent the next few months before jumping on another flight, this time to Canada, then Fiji. She has now returned home because her sister is expecting her first child and she “really wanted to be home for that.” However, while in Canada, Sarah had booked tickets for her first American festival, Coachella, which is something she had “always dreamed of” and instead of missing out on the three-day music event, she decided to travel solo all the way to California from Liverpool, to experience the festival and claims it was one of the “best experiences” of her life. It was a teenage dream of mine to go so I just thought why should I miss out? And just went, I don’t know when I would get the opportunity to go again so I didn’t want to miss out. “It takes courage to do these things by yourself but I just think, I don’t want to miss out on doing things just because it’s a bit scary. It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life.” Despite her amazing adventurousness, Sarah says she wasn’t always this ‘outgoing’ and ‘courageous’ person, in fact when she was a child she was the total opposite. She said: “When I was young I was so shy, I was not outgoing at all. Honestly, I used to be scared of everything, even fireworks, so I don't know where I got this courage from, people always tell me I’m so brave.” Sarah has applied for her masters in Liverpool and plans to jet set to another part of the world once she graduates. She said: “I’ll have itchy feet and want to go off again by then.”
