Ruben Amorim told to 'get to know' Caoimhin Kelleher as keeper advised on Man United move

Ruben Amorim told to 'get to know' Caoimhin Kelleher as keeper advised on Man United move With rumours rife that Manchester United are in the market for a new goalkeeper, this former striker has weighed in on whether Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher should move to Old Trafford Ruben Amorim has received a verdict on potentially signing Caoimhin Kelleher (Image: Getty ) Teddy Sheringham has ruled out a Manchester United move for Liverpool deputy Caoimhin Kelleher unless Ruben Amorim gets to know the Irishman. With the Red Devils' current first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana under scrutiny after a string of errors, including two costly mistakes in his side's recent 2-2 Europa League first-leg draw with Lyon and being benched for a trip to Newcastle, speculation is mounting that a new shotstopper may be on the summer shopping list as Amorim aims to turn around a team languishing 14th in the Premier League. Liverpool's Kelleher, one of the most promising backup goalkeepers in the league, was tipped to leave Anfield last summer following impressive performances in cup competitions and the league as deputy to the formidable Alisson. Although no transfer materialised then, the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia to Liverpool suggests Kelleher might soon be heading out to become a No. 1 elsewhere. "Caoimhin Kelleher to Manchester United. I don't think that would be good for the player or the club. It would bring so much pressure on his shoulders," Sheringham commented to CasinoHawks. "The only way it might be a success is if Ruben Amorim got to know him personally and was able to have a close relationship with him, but without that, it would be putting too much pressure on his shoulders." The Irishman himself has been incredibly outspoken about his ambitions and opened up in September last year about wanting to find a place where he can play regularly. "I've made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out," stated Kelleher, expressing his intentions to leave Anfield. Kelleher has long impressed as an understudy to Alisson (Image: Getty ) "The club's made that decision to get another goalkeeper [Mamardashvili], and from the outside looking in, it looks like they've made a decision to go in a different direction. "Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like that's 100 per cent my decision," he added, touching on the offers. "But at times it's not always in my hands. "It's been reported that Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. My ambition is clear that I think I'm good enough, and I want to go out and prove it." He again got some Premier League time last month due to Alisson's concussion absence, and as expected, featured prominently in cup matches, including starting in Liverpool's 2-1 League Cup final loss to Newcastle. Yet, with the introduction of Mamardashvili and a wish to play regularly, Kelleher looks set to depart Merseyside at the conclusion of this season.
