The jeans and a half-tucked shirt is a classic look for women, perfect for a casual day out. Many will put part of their shirts into their jeans and leave the rest out for a more polished look, but Chantel Mila has a bit of a different technique. The online content creator gives fashion hacks, organising and home cleaning advice on TikTok. The styling guru recently posted a video on the platform sharing her technique, dressed in a plain, white buttoned down shirt and blue skinny jeans. ‌ In the TikTok video, Chantel said: “If you’re tucking your shirts into your jeans like this, you need to try this simple trick instead. Unfasten the bottom three buttons of your shirt, take the bottom button and from the back put it into the top button hole. Then replace the remaining button hole into the third button and that is it, you get the perfect half-tucked shirt without any tucking.” Personal stylist and fashion blogger Hallie Abrams has given some background information on this trend. On her blog she explained: “For the first two decades of this century, tops were barely tucked in. Probably because the pants, at this time, were riding so low. “And, the belts we previously wore to fit our waists couldn’t work with the low-rise pants. So our belts collected dust for almost twenty years. ‌ “And waists were somewhat irrelevant. And we all forgot how to tuck in shirts, thus the need for the current blog post.” Content cannot be displayed without consent She noted that from 2000 to 2009, ultra low rise jeans “reigned supreme” and there was not a lot of shirt-tucking happening. Then the “skinny jeans craze” came in the 2010s and shirts were left untucked so they could cover the bum, according to Hallie. ‌ The next decade, 2020s, has been marked by the pandemic when many people were wearing sweatpants for the first two years and the “new proportions for clothing seem even more confusing.” Hallie cited The Business of Fashion when she claimed that skinny jeans have been “dethroned” and wider leg styles. She added: “Pants are getting wider, so tops are getting shorter. And/or need to be tucked in to highlight the waist and give the wearer some shape. “The new proportion is more hourglass and waist centric.” The stylist continued: “With higher waists and wider pant profiles, shirt tucking is essential.” ‌ Hallie has put together a quick guide on when to tuck or not. She claims that full tucks suit bottoms that are culotte, wide leg, and trouser style, half tucks are best with skinny pants because they “offer some waist definition and cover the back” however, this style rarely works with wider, relaxed style pants as there is “too much visual bulk around the bum.” Chantel captioned her TikTok video: The magic trick for the perfect tucked shirt every time. Such a simple way to elevate your next outfit.” It has garnered 803,200 views, 12,500 likes and nearly 100 comments, at the time of writing. One user said: “Such a clever and simple trick!
