The current job market in the tech industry presents its challenges; however, aspiring candidates should not lose hope, as explained by Will Kencel, a senior engineer at Microsoft Xbox. In a recent interview with Codesmith, Kencel addressed the common concern about the difficulty of landing a job in tech, stating, When people are saying its impossible to get a job its not impossible.
Kencel, who joined Microsoft in 2021, emphasized that while job opportunities are currently more limited and competition is increasingly intense, the fundamental strategies for securing a position in tech have not drastically changed. My goal was to get a job, just like everybody, he recounted. It was easier back then. Its harder now, but its similar tools and determination. His perspective highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability in the job search process.
Concerns surrounding the future of work, particularly fears of a diminishing career ladder for younger generations and the impact of automation on job availability, have become widespread. Nevertheless, Kencel believes that the notion of artificial intelligence replacing software engineers is exaggerated. He encouraged job seekers not to let these fears undermine their confidence. I would say, remain optimistic, Kencel advised. He noted that maintaining a positive outlook significantly increases the likelihood of achieving desirable outcomes. If you offer a pessimistic attitude I cant do it, these interviews are too hard youre setting yourself up for failure.
The job search can be challenging, particularly for those in the engineering sector. Data from job search engine Indeed shows that the number of relevant tech job openings in the United States has decreased by more than 30% compared to five years ago. Kencel acknowledged that prolonged unemployment can take a toll on an individuals mental health and self-esteem. Being out of a job can be hard on the brain, he said. Dont let where youre at determine your self-worth as a software engineer, and dont let it get you down.
While there is no guaranteed formula for success in the job hunt, Kencel suggests that progress often stems from a combination of smaller actions rather than a single impressive project or connection. Its a lot of little things that add up, he explained. By diversifying their job search strategies, candidates can enhance their chances of success. Its not going to be like a great project you made or one connection you made; its the accumulation of many small efforts.
Kencel emphasized the importance of viewing failure as a learning opportunity. If a particular approach doesnt yield results, it may be time to reassess and adjust strategies. Dont give up, because its hard and it can be discouraging at times, he urged. If you experience some sort of failure, just rework your strategy.
For those eager to stand out in a crowded job market, Kencel offers practical suggestions. He advocates for networking and attending local tech events to broaden ones search beyond digital applications. I feel like going to actual in-person events and lining up roles in your pipeline is important, he stated, pointing out that remote roles tend to attract a more extensive pool of applicants. In your city, you can really stand out more to people actually there.
Despite the frustrations that come with job searching, Kencel urges candidates to stay committed to their efforts. Dont get discouraged and just stop trying, he advised. Thats like taking something that youve worked and built up and saying, All right, this is as far as its going to get, when you can always take something further and build it up bigger.
According to Kencel, there is always an additional step that can be taken to improve ones prospects, whether it involves building a personal website, publishing blog posts, or attending conferences. That mountain of work you have to do just starts with one step, he concluded, reinforcing the idea that persistence is key in the journey towards securing a tech job.
