Man, 30, arrested after SUV plows into Vancouver Filipino festival, killing several

VANCOUVER — Vancouver's interim police chief says a 30-year-old man has been arrested after a car plowed through a Vancouver street festival being staged by the city's Filipino community, killing several people. Steve Rai says in a midnight news briefing at the scene in South Vancouver that the lone man was apprehended by bystanders before being taken into police custody. Rai says multiple people were also injured in Saturday night's incident at the Lapu Lapu Day festival, and that the arrested man was known to police. He says police still aren't sure about the number of casualties, and family members need to be contacted before police can say how many people died. Rai says the person in custody is a "lone male" who was "known to police in certain circumstances." Witness Nic Magtajas described an SUV going at high speed through the crowd, sending pedestrians' bodies flying. “I saw a bunch of people go over, go high up from the impact of hitting the car and such,” he said.
