More info A group of caravans, vans and other vehicles have been spotted on a patch of local playing fields in Exeter today (Sunday, April 27). A photo taken by a local resident shows at least five caravans alongside seven vans or other vehicles parked on the grass in Wonford Playing Fields. Locals believe the vehicles to belong to a group of travellers. It is not the first time that the travelling community has set up camp on these fields. Back in May 2024, DevonLive reported that Exeter City Council was 'taking steps' after a group arrived at the playing fields. At the time a spokesperson for the Council said measures were being taken to "regain possession of the land". In a photo taken then, more than a dozen cars and vans could be seen parked up on the site, near the football posts. At the time, one resident told DevonLive the vehicles were "blocking access to football fields and basketball court". Last year, a member of a Mid-Devon travelling group spoke to DevonLive about their "changing way of life". One man, who did not wish to be named, said: “Even the local shops and the local bars in towns and villages don't serve us food and won’t let the kids use the toilets. "We went to the service station up here in Cullompton and they barred us for no reason when they discovered who we are." He went on to say: "Gypsies are travellers; we like travelling around every summer. "Unfortunately, we had to park up somewhere. The council won't give us enough sites, we're fighting for years for sites. "We stopped in Cullompton, we didn’t have to come here, but the next town up, we're going to have the same problem again; how do we win?" Just a few days ago, DevonLive also reported that a group of travellers who arrived in Exeter and set up camp in Exeter Arena car park on Wednesday (April 23) would be evicted from the site after less than 24 hours. Six caravans arrived at around 7.30pm on Wednesday and reportedly are unconnected with the previous encampment set up at the same site at the end of last month. Councillor Liz Pole said the council began the procedure for moving on the group through the court on Thursday, April 24.
