The 70-year-old actor’s family announced that he was retiring from acting in 2022 after he was diagnosed with the cognitive disorder asphasia. One year later, it was confirmed that he was also battling frontotemporal dementia, a condition that affects a person’s speech and comprehension. Article continues below Rising to fame in the television comedy Moonlighting, Willis went on to become one of the actors of his generation with his breakout movie performance in 1988’s Die Hard. Quickly becoming an A-lister, Willis would go on to find further success in The Last Boy Scout, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys and The Sixth Sense. At the peak of his popularity in 1998, Willis led the film that earned more money than any other movie released over those 12 months. Directed by Michael Bay, Armageddon tells the story of a group of blue-collar deep-core drillers who are sent by Nasa to destroy a giant asteroid. Joining Willis in Armageddon is Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, Will Patton, Peter Stormare, Keith David, Owen Wilson, William Fichtner and Steve Buscemi. Upon its release, Armageddon grossed a colossus $553.7 million at the worldwide box office against a $140 million budget. Critics weren’t sold on the soap opera drama mixed with action, giving it a harsh score of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s biggest critic was surprisingly Ben Affleck, who infamously went on a rant about the story in the movie’s DVD commentary. He said at the time: “I asked Michael Bay why it was easier to train oil drillers to become astronauts than it was to train astronauts to become oil drillers, and he told me to shut the f*** up. “So that was the end of that talk. [Does Michael Bay voice] 'You know, Ben, just shut up, OK? You know, this is a real plan'. I was like, 'You mean it’s a real plan at NASA to train oil drillers?' And he was like, 'Just shut your mouth’.” He added in a later scene: “Here is where we demonstrate that [logic] because Bruce is going to tell the guys they did a bad job of building the drill tank. “See, he’s a salt of the earth guy, and the NASA Nerd-onauts don’t understand his salt of the earth ways. His humble ways. Like, somehow they can build rocket ships, but they don’t understand what makes a good transmission!” Whether you agree or disagree with Affeck’s stance on Armageddon’s logic, there’s no denying its a film that demands your attention.
