Mercedes-AMG teases all-new Porsche Taycan rival

Mercedes-AMG has set tongues wagging by offering a first glimpse of the German performance brand’s latest standalone model – an electric super-sedan to rival the Porsche Taycan. The darkened silhouette of the curvaceous new model was previewed in a teaser image posted to Mercedes-AMG’s social media accounts over the weekend, accompanied by a short caption. “Just a glimpse — for now,” the Instagram post read. We first saw a heavily camouflaged version of this next-generation performance sedan testing in Sweden last year, but this is our first look at its true shape. The upcoming model will debut Mercedes-AMG’s first standalone electric vehicle (EV) platform, known as AMG.EA (electric architecture). AMG.EA will exclusively underpin the brand’s performance EVs, starting with the as-yet unnamed GT 4-Door Coupe replacement. Supplied Credit: CarExpert According to Mercedes-AMG, the AMG.EA platform brings axial-flux electric motors and a high-performance high-voltage battery, good for up to 746kW of power. That’s shy of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s 815kW output when launch control is active, but more than the 700kW produced by the Taycan Turbo S in launch mode. A full reveal of the new four-door performance EV is expected in June, with some reports suggesting it will be named the GT4 EV.
