Coventry City transfer notebook: Awaiting clarity as Sky Blues poised to act in summer window

Coventry City’s recruitment department will face a little more clarity today if the club lose to Middlesbrough and fail to extend their season with the opportunity of a back door promotion push via the Championship play-offs. If the Sky Blues have to dust themselves down in defeat then Dean Austin and his scouting team will concentrate on building for another attempt to escape the second tier next season. However, if Frank Lampard’s men beat Boro then the club will continue to plan for two very different outcomes – either promotion to the Premier League or another season at this level. A sixth season in the Championship would mean modest spending and probably a sale or two to generate funds but, ultimately, the opportunity to strengthen the squad to go again next season with another crack at a sustained promotion push. Success in a Wembley play-off final, however, would see City effectively winning the lottery and shopping in a very different market for players to help compete to stay in England’s top division. It was looking like Kporha could have been available on a free transfer after failing to agree fresh terms to stay at Palace last month but recent negotiations have borne fruit, with the player this week signing a new long-term deal to keep him at Selhurst Park until 2029. That doesn't mean that City can't still go after the Ghanaian, who might well be a loan option. Failing that he'd clearly cost a few quid if the Sky Blues wanted a permanent deal. Goalkeeper option City have also been linked with interest in promising young goalkeeper Kees Sims who is currently at Swedish top flight club Gais. The 22-year-old is a New Zealand Under-23s international is contracted until 2028, having previously been a regular for third tier side Ljungskile SK. The Sky Blues are no strangers to the Scandinavian market where they scouted and bought Sweden international Oliver Dovin from Hammarby last summer, and Danish midfeilder Victor Torp from Norwegian side Sarpsborg 15 months ago. And with Dovin out long-term with an ACL injury and expected to miss a large chunk of next season, Lampard will be keen to recruit a third keeper to compete at a senior level. Swedish outlet Fotbolldirekt.se reports that Coventry are one of several clubs in the English Championship who “want to sign” the 6ft 4ins tall keeper in the summer. Lampard link to midfielder City have been linked with interest in what one Championship pundit has described as a “decent option” for Frank Lampard come the summer transfer window. The Sky Blues are, according to Mail Sport, among a number of clubs “interested” in Rangers’ midfielder Tom Lawrence, who is in the final couple of months of his contract at Ibrox and expected to leave as a free agent in May. The report claims Blackburn Rovers, Burnley, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion are all said to have an interest, while League One promotion hopefuls Wrexham, plus foreign clubs Olympiacos, PAOK and Besiktas have also been named as potential suitors for the 31-year-old, who played under Lampard at Derby County. Do the club need to sell? It all depends on whether they get promoted or not but either way, probably. If City hit the jackpot they'll return to the Premier League with a cash boost of over £100million, changing the face of the transfer market and where the club can afford to shop. If that was the case there would, inevitably, be players who would fall by the wayside and whom the club would look to move on. That may still be the case for a handful if City remain in the Championship, of course. That being the case, it's likely that Doug King would seek a decent sale to help fund improvements, with the likes of Ben Sheaf possibly being made available at the right price. What I think the team needs Regardless of which division City are in next season, one thing's for sure that the team needs to be a whole lot tighter at the back. After conceding a whopping 58 league goals, Frank Lampard needs to turn his attention to his back line and in goal. With first choice Oliver Dovin out for several months next season, a new senior keeper is surely a must. City also currently only have one specialist right-back in Milan van Ewijk, who needs competition and cover. Depending on whether Sheaf stays or goes, another quality midfielder or two wouldn't go amiss either, and the same goes for up front where City's strikers haven't scored enough, with Haji Wright leading the charts with 12, followed by Ellis Simms (7) and Brandon Thomas-Asante (6). Another winger to compete with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, meanwhile, on the right would add strength and depth to City's attacking options. What do you think the team needs? Click HERE to have your say.
