In the vibrant heart of Mumbai, a remarkable penthouse has emerged as a beacon of innovative design, born from the unique constraints of the COVID-19 lockdown. This elegant residence, known as Enso House, showcases the artistry and ingenuity of S+PS Architects, a local firm renowned for its transformative architectural solutions. The penthouse has evolved into a spacious and artistic living space that reflects both personal expression and the evolving needs of its inhabitants.

Spanning three impressive floors within a residential tower, this exceptional apartment offers breathtaking views over the Aarey Milk Colony, a cherished green space nestled within the expansive Sanjay Gandhi National Park. As the principal architect Pinkish Shah explains, the firm was tasked with redesigning the penthouse located on the 50th and 51st floors, with an additional terrace and pool on the 52nd floor. The project began in 2020, a time marked by global uncertainty, when many sought comfort and a sense of freedom in their living environments. Shah notes, ‘There was a need to feel a sense of freedom in an otherwise restrictive situation that the world had come to during Covid-19.’ This notion of freedom and connection with nature informed the design process at every stage.

The layout of the penthouse underwent a dramatic transformation, with the original structure being stripped down to allow for a fresh configuration that prioritized open space and natural light. The most significant change was the introduction of a new staircase, a striking spiral design that serves as a central feature uniting the various levels of the home. Finished in a vibrant orange hue with timber treads, this staircase captivates visitors and becomes a focal point as soon as one steps into the apartment at the 50th floor.

On the main living level, the design team incorporated elements that blend aesthetics with functionality. The living room features a unique terrazzo carpet made from a rich mix of Jaisalmer stone, granite, marble, and copper. This intricate design is complemented by a custom hand-woven carpet that echoes its patterns, creating a cohesive visual experience throughout the space. Additionally, there is a raised glass bar counter and bespoke storage solutions crafted from wood and copper, adding layers of sophistication and practicality.

The dining area, which occupies a double-height space, is particularly noteworthy for its connection to the outdoors. It opens up to a lush terrace, fostering a harmonious relationship between indoor and outdoor living. The walls and ceiling are softly curved concrete panels that diffuse light, creating an inviting atmosphere for family gatherings and intimate dinners. A playful design element, inspired by Anish Kapoor’s iconic Cloud Gate sculpture, is introduced in the form of a rotating polished steel window, which connects the dining room to the son’s bedroom above, emphasizing the fluidity and openness of the space.

Ascending to the rooftop terrace on the 52nd floor, residents are greeted with an expansive outdoor area that includes a private pool, dining space, and comfortable seating, perfect for entertaining or lounging under the stars. Shah remarks, ‘Having a private pool with a terrace and the open sky above was a boon, but one missed the treetops.’ Fortunately, the verdant landscape of the Aarey Colony offers a soothing backdrop, enhancing the sense of tranquility that permeates the home. The terrace is also equipped to accommodate a variety of functions, featuring vegetable patches for gardening enthusiasts and a projection wall for outdoor movie nights.

At the upper level, the penthouse includes versatile spaces such as a guest accommodation area or a Puja room, showcasing the thoughtful design principles that cater to the needs of a modern family. The primary bedroom suite, along with the son’s bedroom, shares access to the terrace, further promoting a lifestyle that seamlessly merges comfort with nature.

Enso House, aptly named after the Japanese word ‘ensō,’ which symbolizes wholeness and completion, stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of its designers and residents alike. In the face of unprecedented challenges, this Mumbai penthouse has not only transformed physically but also embodies a renewed sense of freedom and artistic expression, making it a truly unique living environment.
