More info Mould build-up is a familiar problem not just within the seal of washing machines but also in the drawer and the area behind it. The damp environment of washing machine detergent drawers can lead to mould, which makes cleaning and inspection difficult. A cleaning fan has taken to the Mrs Hinch Army Facebook page to share her triumph over the grime, illustrating how she managed to revitalise her appliance's drawer from a state that left her "disgusted" to one that now looks "amazing". In her social media post, Sandra Picton expressed her dismay upon finding mould lurking in her machine, stating, "I was disgusted to find this much mould in the drawer of my washing machine." (Image: Getty Images) She went on to recount her diligent cleaning process, conducted even while seven months into pregnancy: "To think I was washing my baby's clothes in there! My seven-month pregnant butt sat there and scrubbed it." Sandra broke down the steps she took with her innovative approach, explaining that she used a combination of white vinegar and dish soap applied with a sponge, altered with an embedded fork for extended reach. About 20 minutes later, the results spoke for themselves: "White vinegar and washing up liquid on a kitchen sponge with a fork stabbed into it so that I could reach the back. It took about 20 minutes, but the results were amazing." Touting the potency of white vinegar as a natural cleaning solutions champion, its properties are lauded for eliminating more than 80% of mould varieties and averting their recurrence. Thus, those inclined towards eco-friendly options have a powerful weapon for achieving a gleaming, mould-free detergent drawer. Mrs Hinch fans have flocked to the comment section to share their appreciation for the cleaning achievements. Some gave Sandra advice on how to prevent future mould by suggesting she leave the drawer slightly open after each use. (Image: Getty Images) Claire Faux commended the clean-up, saying: "It's amazing how quickly it builds up, but you've done a brilliant job! Spotless." Linda Membury recounted her own tale: "I had to do mine the other week. I now always keep the drawer open after every use (ok, not practical if your washing machine is your way), but it doesn't get mouldy anymore. Prevention is better than a cure. Well done. Looks amazing!". Tina Uzzell added her cleaning preference to the mix: "I love using soap and vinegar to clean any part of my washing machine, it's the cheapest thing to use too." Cleaning gurus advise that you should thoroughly clean both your washing machine drawer and the machine itself at least monthly. While more frequent cleaning sessions can be advantageous, experts suggest aiming for a thorough cleaning at least once a month. Employing additional steps, like wiping the drawer after use or leaving it ajar to promote airflow, can help keep the build-up at bay.
