More info Easter is a time which gives many people a four day break. With Good Friday and Easter Sunday both being bank holidays it can mean a time for family and friends to get together or just a relaxing few days at home. But if you run short of supplies there can be an issue. For while Good Friday will have most supermarkets operating, although often on reduced hours, it is a different story on Easter Sunday. For that is one of two dates that most supermarkets in England and Wales must close their doors. Under government rules larger shops in the UK are not allowed to open on either Easter Sunday or Christmas Day. Scotland has other rules and many will remain open on Easter Sunday. However it does mean the vast majority of supermarket chains have no choice but to remain closed in England and Wales - including all the bigger Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Tesco. However one chain will be operating most of its stores as normal. The Co-op has more than 2,500 local, convenience and middle-sized stores. And many of these fall outside the rules which only affect large stores. Under the trading laws shops in England and Wales over 280 square metres have restricted opening times. This means they: can open on Sundays but only for 6 consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm must close on Easter Sunday must close on Christmas Day However most of the Co-op stores are under the 280 square metre cut-off meaning they can open as usual across these times. While individual stores are setting their opening times for the weekend, most appear to be open. It says while most are likely to be open there might be some changes to times. It warns: "During bank holidays and special times of year some of our stores may open later and close earlier than normal." You can check opening times for your local Co-op online. Other stores have confirmed their Easter opening times. However, as expected, most of the major chains are closing their bigger branches on Easter Sundays. But Tesco and Sainsbury's say there will be some smaller branches of their convenience stores open. Sainsbury's says some of its local stores will open between 7am and 9pm but to check here for your branch opening times. Tesco will also open most of its Express branches.
