In a blind tasting, the panel judged the cheeses on their aroma, appearance, texture, and most crucially, taste, reports the Mirror. Cheddar, when consumed in moderation, offers nutritional benefits. It's rich in protein and a good source of minerals like iodine and phosphorus, along with vitamins B2, B5, and B12. The taste testers sampled a variety of supermarket-own brand mature cheddar cheeses from Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's, alongside big-name brands. The Express reported that Tesco's Finest Mature English Cheddar Cheese emerged victorious. The site stated: "Our testers loved the look of this cheese and highly rated its first, smooth texture. Most also thought its salt level and strength of flavour were just right. People found it pleasingly crumbly and creamy, too." The runner-up was the MandS Cornish Cove Mature Cheddar Cheese, which earned praise as a "good all-rounder" from the tasting panel, achieving a score of 73%. Priced at £4.25 for a 350g pack, it certainly made an impression. "The majority of our tastes said the salt level was right, and they were also impressed by the smooth, firm texture," was the accompanying comment. "Its flavour and crumbliness satisfied most tasters, too." Aldi's Specially Selected West Country Mature Cheddar stood out as the most wallet-friendly choice, retailing at just £2.99 for 350g. Nevertheless, its flavour didn't quite hit the mark, with many tasters finding it "bland" and taking issue with the cheese's texture. In an unexpected twist, the popular Cathedral City brand didn’t reach the summit, only managing to amass a total score of 70%. Despite being one of the more affordable options (and the overall winner), the flavour didn't fully win over the tasters.
