Over the past three decades a dedicated band of volunteers has undertaken environmental, historical and maintenance work at the property. Amongst their recent projects, led by Bill Bowron, is the restoration of a long-neglected original Furphy Tank. These Aussie icons, invented in the 1860s, usually had wheels and shafts for a horse and were used to carry water to stock and to fight bushfires. They have a connection to World War I too - they were used to cart water for Australian army personnel, including at Gallipoli. They quickly became popular as gathering places where soldiers could exchange rumours and far-fetched tales, hence the word 'furphy' entered our lingo. For Jenny Horsfield, also a founding member of MOTH, it's one of her favourite objects at the homestead. "I always remember my mum repeating the motto stamped on all the Furphy tanks: "Good. Better. Best. Never let it rest. Till your good is better. And your better - best."
