Wombo Games Unveils Raiders of Blackveil, a Unique Strategy Roguelite

Wombo Games, a newly established game development studio, made an exciting announcement today, revealing not only its formation but also its first game title, Raiders of Blackveil. Founded by Janos Flsser, a co-founder of the renowned IO Interactive, Wombo Games is setting its sights on the gaming landscape with a fresh approach. The studio is preparing to launch Raiders of Blackveil in early access this summer, and it is already available for players to wishlist on Steam.
According to the developers at Wombo Games, Raiders of Blackveil is a strategic roguelite that creatively blends mechanics from Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas (MOBAs), role-playing games (RPGs), and player-versus-environment (PvE) extraction titles. Players can either embark on quests solo or team up in cooperative groups of up to three. The narrative unfolds in a dystopian industrial fantasy world, where anthropomorphic animals find themselves oppressed by a powerful human mega-corporation known as Blackveil. This unique premise sets the stage for an engaging gameplay experience.
As players delve into the world of Raiders of Blackveil, they can select from a diverse roster of champions, each belonging to one of eight distinct classes. These champions are equipped with unique abilities that enhance gameplay, allowing for varied strategies as players attempt to loot and raid against the villainous Blackveil corporation. The games Steam page highlights the intricate character design and world-building that are set to make this title a standout in the gaming community.
Chris Nelson, the game director, spoke with GamesBeat about the inspiration behind the game. He shared, We were working together for six years, playing games after hours a lot. We were searching for a very particular experience, yet we could not find it. We enjoyed playing MOBAs, action RPGs, and roguelites frequently, and we thought, Lets analyze what it is we love about these genres. Why do we keep returning to them, and why do they not fulfill our expectations? This reflective approach ultimately guided the teams vision to merge these three genres into an original intellectual property, which was a crucial aspect of their development process. They aimed to build a memorable world that would resonate with players for years to come.
Flsser added insights into the studio's operational strategy, stating, We wanted to maintain a small and nimble team to see how far we could push our limits. We secured funding and officially started in July 2023, which means we are approaching our two-year anniversary. Remarkably, we had a playable version of the game ready within the first month and a half, and when investors played it, they were immediately captivated by the concept. This has been the first instance where Ive witnessed investors get genuinely excited about a team and their concept. Over the past two years, we managed to raise funds three separate times. Presently, our focus remains on delivering the right game to the right audience.
