GNOME Core Apps and Libraries
Software
The GNOME Software application, which facilitates the installation and updating of applications and system extensions, received notable enhancements this week. Philip Withnall announced that Owen Chiaventone has implemented several useful profile-guided optimizations for XML parsing within gnome-software. This optimization occurs each time there is an update to the repository metadata. Improvements identified during this process can be found in detail on the GNOME GitLab issue tracker at Moreover, sunniva has announced the long-awaited release of Stockpile 0.5.0. After a significant hiatus, this version brings the application up to speed with the GNOME 48 runtime. Users can look forward to an improved user experience featuring a new start screen and a functionality that allows the recovery of corrupted data. Additional information about this release is available on Flathub.
Pipeline
In the realm of video content, schmiddi shared the news that versions 2.2.0 through 2.2.2 of the Pipeline application have been rolled out this week. A key enhancement in this version is the ability to utilize all configured Piped instances in parallel when querying the feed. This modification has resulted in a remarkable speed increase for feed queriesup to seven times faster for some users. Furthermore, the management of the Piped instance list is now automated, with Pipeline automatically downloading a list of functional instances upon each startup. This improvement not only enhances reliability but also eliminates the need for users to manually search for working instances. The update also addresses a bug wherein videos uploaded around the same time would incorrectly replace one another in the 'watch later' list.
Flare
Additionally, schmiddi announced the release of Flare version 0.16.0, which introduces initial support for receiving stickers, enhancing the chat experience for users on Signal.
Miscellaneous Updates
Lastly, Philip Withnall reported that Maximiliano has implemented a feature allowing users to securely store their GitLab token in libsecret while utilizing gitlab-changelog to document NEWS entries for releases. For further details, refer to the corresponding merge request on GitLab at
