As the Capital reels under sweltering heat, residents in parts of South Delhi have been facing inconvenience amid a disruption in water supply. On April 23, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had said that the water supply would be affected till Saturday in several areas, including Chirag Delhi, Khirki Extension, Panchsheel Vihar, and Saket, due to ongoing maintenance work on the BRT (bus rapid transit) road opposite Indian Oil petrol pump in Sadiq Nagar. “The consumers are advised to store a sufficient quantity of water. During the shutdown period, water tankers will be available on request for water emergencies…” read the statement. Abir Phukan, a resident at C Block, South Extension, said, “At least around 10 households have not been getting water for two weeks now. This is just the beginning of summer…and we are already hit by such a water crisis. The DJB officials have not given a response despite multiple follow-ups. We have just been told that the pressure is low and there is no issue.” A DJB official, however, denied claims of any such crisis. “A few residents do not draw water from the pumps in a timely manner. We have been making sure that the water is supplied regularly. There have only been pressure-related minor issues, which are being dealt with.” Another resident in Sainik Farms claimed that no prior information was received regarding the water supply disruption this week. “The main problem with the water being gone for 48 hours is that there was no notification or announcement. We used to get prior information about the restricted water supply. I remember getting notifications bout it last summer at least. So that makes it difficult to plan out water consumption also,” said Ria Wadikar. However, officials in the DJB rejected the claim and said a statement was issued on April 23.
