Multiple people dead after driver rams vehicle into crowd at Vancouver street festival

Police say in a social media post that the driver has been taken into custody, and that multiple people have also been injured. They say the person “drove into a crowd” at the street festival at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street just after 8 p.m. Friday. The Filipino community’s Lapu Lapu Day festival was under way at the time in the South Vancouver neighbourhood. Video posted on social media showed victims and debris strewn across a long stretch of road, with at least seven people lying immobile on the ground. A black SUV with a crumpled front section could be seen in still photos from the scene. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim posted to X, saying he was “shocked and deeply saddened” and that more information would be forthcoming “as soon as we can.” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who is running to represent a riding in the region, posted a similar message.
