Speaking on Kane’s Call on Sunday night, Cornes blasted the standard of umpiring in the game generally speaking, but specifically that of Saturday night’s game. “I won’t often do this, and if I do, pull me up on it — but now’s my time to launch,” Cornes said. “We’re at almost crisis levels with umpiring today. “Four (on-field umpires) is not working and we’ve got to look at the 50-metre penalty.” Kane Cornes was critical of the umpiring in the North Melbourne-Port Adelaide game. He just goes over the mark — that is 50 every day of the week. So, what is 50 and what isn’t? That was called no 50. “I just don’t get it.” Stream full episodes of Kane’s Call for free and on-demand at 7plus He also highlighted an inconsistency in paying a dubious mark to North Melbourne’s Harry Sheezel, then calling play on to a similar effort from Port Adelaide’s Jeremy Finlayson. Cornes called for a change in the game’s officiators, saying they should go full-time. “I think four umpires is not working, we need to look at whether they go full-time, because the quality of umpiring right now is at the level where it is affecting games,” he said. “Four goals they kicked from 50s, two goals they kicked directly from free kicks; that is six of their 13 goals which were directly attributed to from umpiring. “I couldn’t believe it, and it really did take the shine off what was a pretty hard-fought game in the end.”
