Indian Premier League, BCCI considers extending IPL to 94 matches in 2028, video
The BCCI is considering expanding the Indian Premier League to 94 matches in 2028 to ensure a full home-and-away season for the lucrative T20 tournament. When the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants were added to the IPL in 2022, the competition was extended to a 74-match format, with each of the ten teams playing 14 group-stage games before a four-match finals series. However, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal flagged the possibility of expanding the tournament to include 18 group-stage matches for each franchise — facing each opponent twice — after the current media-rights cycle’s completion. Given how the interest of the fan is changing with regard to bilateral and ICC events, in regard to franchise cricket and T20 cricket, we’ll have to talk more seriously about it and see how we can create maximum value for the stakeholders of the game. “Ideally, we’d want a larger window, or to maybe go on from 74 to 84 or 94 at some point… So that every team gets to play against every team home and away, for that, you need 94 games.” Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill. Under the current future tours programme, which is locked in until 2027, the IPL has been allocated a dedicated window from mid-March until the end of May. But if the T20 league increased to 94 matches in 2028, the competition would likely need to be extended by an additional two weeks, soaking up more of the international calendar.
