After announcing an indefinite hiatus last fall, the Canadian band METZ has made a remarkable return, performing their song A Boat to Drown In during the latest episode of the Netflix talk show Everybodys Live With John Mulaney. This unexpected reunion delighted fans as it took place in a festive setting themed around Christmas.

The episode featured a star-studded lineup including comedian Conan OBrien, actress Ayo Edebiri, and the iconic Tina Fey, creating a memorable evening filled with laughter and holiday cheer. As the show wrapped up, host John Mulaney excitedly introduced the band by saying, Theyve reunited for one night only. He went on to express his admiration for METZ, referring to them as one of my favorite bands ever, a sentiment that resonated with many in the audience.

Originally formed in Toronto, METZ consists of guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins, bassist Chris Slorach, and drummer Hayden Menzies. In October of the previous year, the trio took to social media to share the news of their hiatus. Weve collectively decided to close this chapter of METZ, they stated, expressing a need to focus on their personal lives and family matters. They emphasized that this decision was not taken lightly, saying, The band will be on indefinite hiatus while we take time to focus on other endeavors and enjoy more time at home with our families.

Reflecting on their time as a band, they added, If youve ever attended a METZ show, you know it was more than a band to us. We gave every ounce of ourselves to METZ, and it will be very hard to let it go. They cherished the sense of community and connection that music brings, noting, The intangible feeling of connection, community, and inclusivity that music creates has always been at the heart of what we do and will inevitably be what we miss the most. We will miss singing, screaming, sweating, and dancing with all of you.

A Boat to Drown In is a track from their 2020 album, Atlas Vending. Following the hiatus announcement, METZ released their fifth studio album, Up on Gravity Hill, in 2024 through the renowned Sub Pop label. Their 2015 album, II, received accolades from music critics, with Rolling Stone praising the bands ability to fuse catchy hooks within their intense sound, drawing comparisons to the legendary Nirvana. The publication noted, METZs genius, like Nirvanas, is their ability to embed hooks in even the most abrasive onslaughts, and express emotion that, as fever-pitched as it gets, is always irreproachably honest.
