There's a vast array of flowers you can select for your garden, but Joseph Clark, who provides advice on growing fruit and vegetables and penned the book Garden To Save The World, has singled out one he thinks should be a staple in every garden. He lauded nasturtiums as "possibly the most useful plant" he possesses. Nasturtiums are edible and have a unique peppery flavour, often used in salads or as garnishes. This gardening expert advises all those with outdoor spaces to cultivate this attractive, vibrant flower. Joe shared a video on TikTok where he stated: "This here is one simple plant that I recommend in every garden. Every part of my garden has to have nasturtiums. But more importantly, they're fantastic when planted in your vegetable patch because absolutely everything loves to eat them," reports the Express. He further noted that "slugs and snails can't get enough of nasturtium foliage" and cabbage butterflies deposit their caterpillar eggs beneath the leaves. Nasturtiums serve as a "natural pest control" deterring unwanted pests from your precious plants, according to Joe. He suggests that now is an ideal time to purchase some inexpensive nasturtium plants or seeds to scatter around your garden. These plants will "grow, bloom and self-seed to return every spring, giving you an almost endless supply all from a few cheap plants." In his TikTok video caption, Joe explains there are "so many reasons" to have nasturtiums in your garden. He went on: "Not only are nasturtiums a very pretty and easy to grow flower, they are possibly the most useful plant I've got in the garden. "Every part is completely edible, and I think is delicious when added to a summer salad, giving off a taste similar to rocket. They are super simple and easy to grow, and once planted out will pretty much look after themselves." He also highlighted that organic pest control is the primary reason he cultivates this flower. Joe concluded by saying: "Not only are they super useful, but if you plant one or two nasturtium plants, you will have them pretty much for life. "While they will die back each year, they will self seed. The following spring you will notice lots of little nasturtium seedlings popping up in that area. Thin them out and keep the strongest to start the cycle all over again." His TikTok video has attracted significant attention, accumulating 160,500 views, 9,907 likes, and over 100 comments at the time of writing. In the comments section, a fellow gardener shared a creative use for nasturtium leaves and flowers: "I make a pesto using the nasturtium leaves and flowers! Good way to bulk up a basil pesto, and it's [a] delicious peppery flavour!" Another commenter described their experience with the hardy plants: "I till my garden once a year, I planted these guys once, 10yrs ago. I've never had to reseed. They are currently growing now. Once they drop seeds they live there now." A third viewer appreciated their decorative value, saying, "I've got a bunch in purple and a white/yellow colour as they are so good to hide dodgy fencing too." A fourth enthusiastically chimed in, declaring, "These are possibly my favourite plant."
